Is it even worth switching companies and jumping from 70k to 80k?

Just started my first week of i onboarding and the company seems great but the pay is ****. Just got an offer today for 80k at a large pharma company and I checked after taxes in my current state it’s an extra $130 a week and it won’t even start till July 18.

Should I use this offer and try to increase my salary at current company? I counter offered to them for 90k but they rejected it. If I reject their offer will they crawl back lol? Not sure what to do idek if it’s worth going through another onboarding phase for an extra $130 a week

If you are young just choose the company that will make you more valuable in 3 to 5 years or offers a better quality of life. 10k dont make a chit unless that money will change your life right now which it probably wont.

I assume they are part-time jobs at those levels, so can’t you just work both?

See this is great advice I am new to the adult world and I was thinking to myself 10k barely changes **** but I wasn’t sure. My current company is a tech consultant company, the other is a software engineer role at a pharma company and my current company is growing like crazy so I think I’d have more opportunities here

Who has the better pto, insurance and retirement packages? 10k shouldn't really even be in the equation.

My current company just introduced FTO so basically “unlimited “ and it doesn’t have to accumulate like some other PTO programs do. I can just book 3 weeks off whenever and get it approved. Insurance I don’t care much about but I will definitely look into retirement package at the pharma company I guess that will be the deciding factor as my gf uncle gets 100k a year in retirement from Merck and my current company doesn’t have any good retirement program just the typical 401k percentage match but it wasn’t anything extraordinary

If they say no, just move on.

However keep in mind that the business world is small and the people you work with now could work with you in the future if they move around, and this kind of move (leaving a week in) could leave you with a negative reputation.

In this economy though, $10k extra per year is solid. You should weigh the opportunities at both companies though - which one will leave you in a better position experience wise a couple years down the line?
Right now I am thinking that my current company has more growth opportunities as they have been growing a lot over the past few years. They are hiring like crazy right now which makes me think they want to keep everyone’s salaries relatively low but the Glassdoor salaries seem pretty good for upper level positions which gives me hope. I guess the extra 10k is decent but after taxes it’s like $6.5k

i mean $10k isn't "nothing. That's a 14% increase in pay. Also a lot of people say to make bank, it's more often you have to job hop a bit. If you aren't getting big promotions then you are only getting 2-5% annual raises. So the growth of your company might not matter. My friends who make the most money currently are the ones that always took the highest paying offer. They also job hopped a couple times, so one of em went from $70k, to $130k, to $220+k, totaling 3 different jobs in the same industry over 10 years.
