No, and that was his problem. He still believed in the Republic, even after it was clear that the Republic was dead. People no longer cared about the Republic's rules and laws, and he had to violate many of them just to survive. He should have known.

Augustus did not make the same mistake. He took complete control and declared himself emperor.

I mean he conspired with Pompei and Crassius to control Rome before he finally became caesar so he obviously wanted power. He was involved politically from a young age.

Caesar was declaring himself king without saying it. He wanted a senate still, but only to increase his spy network and control mechanisms.

Augustus did try to implement a triumvirate but only when he was young - and you're right, after a while he knew what needed to be done, and just did it.

It was a gradient of attitudes and events, and it couldn't have worked out any better imo.
Yeah dictator for life and king is pretty much the same thing.

A man named Adrian Goldsworthy has a good book on both Julius and Augustus Caesar. His most recent book was about Alexander the Great and his father Philip of Macedon.
