I don't know how people can even compare 'The Wire' to 'The Sopranos'
I just feel like I need to get this off my chest.
The Wire isn't even in the same league as 'The Sopranos'. I managed to sit through two mediocre seasons of The Wire before just throwing the towel in. It felt like a chore watching it. I heard chit like "season 4 is slightly better" WTF is that cope? How long does a show need to get it's act together?
I can barely remember anything anyone said in the show despite watching it only a few years back. The performances are mostly average'ish with a tiny handful of interesting characters like Omar Little and Brother Mouzone. There would be scenes where detectives would just sit round a table for extended periods talking about tapping ppl's phones, but not in any manner of interesting way. Not enough real meat to the show. I dunno why so many miscers seem to love the show.
The Sopranos on the other hand was amazing from the pilot episode to the finale. Numerous deep, three-dimensional characters. GENIUS level writing. An abundance of memorable lines. Great character sub-plots and character interactions. The show draws you in and hooks you. It can be studied and analyzed almost endlessly. You'll laugh, cry, rage, nod your head in respect, shake it in repulsion and everything in between over the 6 seasons.
I mean, do you guys need to do 20 years in the can before you see what I mean? I'm done compromising.
Cliffs; 'The Sopranos' is leagues better than 'The Wire'.

Yeah you can't compare them becauseSopranos was never at the same level asThe Wire.

I enjoyed The Sopranos more than The Wire, too. I enjoyed the themes and characters and overall vibe more, personally.
But acting like The Wire isn't a masterpiece ain't it. That show is great, too. The Sopranos is dumb fun in comparison.

The Wire is in my top 5 shows of all time. I will admit it is an absolute chore to watch. I hated it at first and felt so let down after hearing all the hype. The show is unforgiving to its audience and doesn’t give a fuk if you’re entertained. Took me several tries until I finally got it. But it takes the city of Baltimore and just shoves your face in it. Shows you the reality of how sh!t really works on every level from the drug dealers, politicians, police, addicts, corruption, lawyers, etc. It’s a masterpiece if you have the patience and perspicacity to see what the writers are really trying to tell you. You can’t lose your focus for even a few seconds if you wanna absorb it correctly.
The Sopranos is good too but fell off for me after a few seasons. The only character I liked was Tony. Carmella was a bitch, Paulie, Silvio, Chris were all douchebags. Tony’s kids sucked, etc. It does show you what the modern day La Cosa Nostra life is like, and many former Mob guys give it their stamp of approval. But it just wasn’t “deep” enough for me, idk.

The Wire is very in depth. If you actually pay attention and are intrigued by great story-telling you'll forever remember The Wire as a docu-series of the hood/drugs/cops/politics. There doesn't need to be action/killing every single episode because it wasn't trying to be that.
When they aired the finale and you see how they went full circle with it... man, what a feel. The Wire is goated because of the detail. Lotta people don't have the attention span to sit and appreciate that imo

Two completely different types of shows...
You either like them or you don't but comparing them is like comparing an apple to a bowling ball!
1. Sopranos
2. Wire
3. The Shield
4. Breaking Bad
3. True Detective S1

I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never seen The Wire. When I finished The Sopranos, it was next on my list because I heard so many people claim it was even better, but watching clips on YouTube did nothing for me, so I moved on.
The Sopranos is truly the greatest television show ever made. The only series I’ve watched that can even be considered in the same league is Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul actually has potential to surpass BB, but let’s wait for the series to end to judge). Nothing else can compare.

It’s the only show where I felt like I had to put in work to truly enjoy but once I did, the payoff was more than worth it. You gotta memorize the characters because there’s a fuk ton.I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never seen The Wire. They have college courses based around The Wire for criminology students because it’s so damn accurate.
The people who get The Wire realize that it’s all about the characters playing the cards they’ve been dealt. And that no matter how much we like to think we’re good people, we’ll never truly know until we’re placed in situations where your moral fortitude is truly tested. A lot of times, the bad guy wins and the good guy loses. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. There is no main character person. The city of Baltimore is the main character.
