Having Your Own Pool Is Pretty Great
For you young boyos, if you have your own place, or when you get your own place, if you have the room and $$ to put a pool in it's pretty great. Now it is expensive AF in some areas of the country (like the people's republic of Maryland) and you do have to commit time and $ on it's upkeep, but not much better than chilling in your heated pool with your gal or friends, drinking, laughing, watching tv, etc.
Plus it gives you a specific outdoor space to get creative with lights, gardens, hardscape, etc. I'll post up some pics of my pool later on, but I have a very modest, 1950's rancher that's nothing special. Just a small, functional house where my high school sweetheart and I raised our 2 kids. However when you walk around to the back you enter an almost resort like setting that's just really cool to call your own.
Now if you don't like to swim, obviously a pool won't be for you. And it's a terrible investment. I put mine in around 2010, during the height of the great recession when pool builders were getting crushed. We'd had an estimate 3 years earlier for an all-in price of $90k. When we had them out during the recession they came down to $50k, still a lot of $, but way more doable than the $90k. Hell handy boyos may even be able to do some of the work themselves. And the pool is only open from May to October where I live. And only the heater makes swimming in May and October enjoyable. So I'm not fooling myself into thinking it was some wise investment, but among other things, taking a swim after a workout is all kinds of awesome.
Anyways, just thinking about enjoying the pool on this hot July 4th made me think to post this.

Had an above ground pool in the backyard growing up. It was definitely a lot of fun in the summers in the 90s. Pool parties, water balloon fights, etc. I'm planning on getting an in-ground one put in in a few years. I wonder if I'll use it as much as an adult.

Grew up with a pool in my dad’s backyard and I used to bring girls over and slay back in my 20s. I remember texting my dad to give him a heads up I was bringing a girl over and when we showed up he would have lit the tiki torches and turned the pool light on lol. He was a great wingman
And relief washes over me in an awesome wave

We enjoyed it for several years until the freaking cicadas came in '05 or thereabout, tunneled out of the ground under it and undermined the sand berm (?) that gave the liner the angle needed to transition from the wall to the ground. We wake up one day and the damn pool is empty and the walls collapsed. We didn't have a pool for a bit which made us start to look at in the grounds.Had an above ground pool in the backyard growing up. It was definitely a lot of fun in the summers in the 90s. I can't wait for my cold tub
1. Kids enjoy it
2. I love chilling in the hot tub to relax
3. I installed a heat pump instead of a heater so i can cool the hot tub and with a few bags of ice it also services as a cold tub
4. I installed swim jets to get a work out in the pool if i desired

I have a large in ground pool here in South Florida. I do all the maintenance myself and I definitely would rather not have a pool. When my kids are older I'm sure we'll get more use out of our but I'm not much of a swimmer. It is great to just jump into after a long morning of sweaty yard work though.

Been thinking about selling my boat and putting in a pool. Young kids have kind of ruined the fun of the boat. When they a little older, ill buy another one.

I looked into but like you said, even for an above ground (done right, not one of them Walmart pools) in the gay state of MD costs a ton.
Good news is I've already got the electric infrastructure in place (old owners must have had a pool once upon a dream) so maybe in the next year or two I'll finally bite the bullet and put one in.

Wife insisted we get one. Lot of time and money to maintain, plus power to run pump all day. We use it maybe 15-20 times a year; total.

Have a pool and hot tub... definitely been a lot of fun. I've gotten pretty efficient at maintaining the water quality without much work now.

It would be sweet to have a pool but I probably would not do it unless I could afford a pool service company to take care of it.
And even then I would probably use it once a year. I have a boat though so I can always take that out if I want to swim.

Ughhh that's like the only thing my house is missing. I looked into it but my yard isn't that big and it just didn't really make much sense, and cost alot also.
But my girlfriends dad lives right near the beach so we swim in the ocean alot and there's lots of places for kayaking and stuff.
But Def not the same as just walking into your back yard and plopping into the pool on a hot day
Damn I'm jelly
