Will downloading consciousness happen in our lifetime.

And will you take it if offered? It might violate some people religious beliefs. Also their would always be a chance that it could be hacked, or glitched.

Yeah but not the way you are imagining it.

There will probably be a computer wired into people’s brains which lets others with the same type of computer view the world as they do by seeing and hearing what the other is experiencing in real time.

It will also be inevitably delayed and milked for free money by THOTs who will demand legal virtual prostitution, guaranteed. Everything which has gone wrong since the internet became affordable for all will happen again, and younger people will think they are the first to experience it, just like anything. You make life easier, people choose to be dumber.

NO, it will never happen.

We are so behind having solved the “hard problem of consciousness” that me might as well be ants trying to construct the Pyramids.

First, we have to actually determine how consciousness is actually generated. It appears to be a phenomena created by our brains, obviously, but neurology has barely even scratched the surface.

For example, we know that general anesthetics are effective in temporarily deleting conscious experience. We do NOT, however, know the exact mechanism of action. We just know they work. This is actually true of many pharmaceutical drugs.

Consciousness is the Last Voyage, it’s the Great Beyond.

We aren’t meant to understand it, and we can never reproduce it unless through natural biological means.

That’s not consciousness. That’s a simulacrum of data gathered from billions of people. It’s not aware, it’s not alive, it’s not CONSCIOUS. It doesn’t feel, it doesn’t think. It only gives us the illusion of doing so.

It’s like a mirror of us. The image in the mirror isn’t real, YOU are. Similarly, any current versions of “AI” are simply programs that draw information from our language and essentially mimic us.

Is it alive? No.

Could it eventually pass the Turing test? Yes.

Can you have a conversation with it? Yes.

Does that mean it’s conscious? No.

No.

We do not know how the brain works.

We don't really know how the brain makes thoughts and ideas. It seems like the brain keeps individual types of info in different parts of the brain. There's memories of smells in one part, words in another, images in another, and somehow they come together. We REALLY have no idea how creative thought works were people think up new ideas based on whatever already in their minds.

That means we will not know how to make a simulation of the mind.

If you don't know how the brain works, we can't detect a thought, for instance, you can't upload anything. If we don't know how the mind works, we can't store anything.

We don’t even know HOW or WHY we actually experience consciousness, or feel “qualia” which is like the smell of a flower, or the sound of a car horn, or the touch of hot pavement.

A computer could easily calculate the aromatic compounds in a rose that creates the “sense” of smell. Or it could detect the decibel level of a car horn, which we perceive as “sound”. Or the temperature of hot pavement, which our skin feels as “hot”.

However, this computer is not conscious.

That's right.

No one has any idea how the brain works and what the phenomenon of each individual mind is within the brain.

Even the idea of "synapses" is a theory based on how electronics work. We don't really know if the brain has synapses.

Everything happening in the brain is going on on too small of a level to observe and so we will never figure it out.

Whatever is going on with brains is also much different than computers so the chances of making an actual AI is very low. We will only be able to make robots until we figure out how the brain works.

We at least have a theory of how neurons connect via axons, and how the different regions of the brain govern certain functions. We have even located portions in each hemisphere that dictate speech, motor control, balance, memory, etc.

For example, Broca’s and Wernicke’s regions are located in the left hemisphere, and govern expressive and receptive thought and partially, function, respectively.

We pretty much understand which region of the brain governs each function. What we DO NOT have any clue of, is how our brains generate consciousness.

That’s why they call it the “Hard Problem”. Because it’s fukin impossible for us to determine.

Nobody knows why you are reading this right now, or feeling your air conditioner, or sense the taste of that steak, or experience sadness that the girl didn’t call you back, or anger because your coworker was mean to you, or happiness when you hug your mom

I don’t want to get too deep into this philosophically

Love me some neuroscience.

I suggest the book “Behave” by Robert Sapolsky It is about the evolution of human behavior and he uses what we know about neuroscience to do so.

He lays out action potential, synaptic gaps, neurotransmitters, the endocrine system and much more.

The human brain and it’s evolution are so amazing I can’t believe everyone isn’t talking about it all the time.

The complexity of consciousness can not be stated nor understood from a simple forum post. It’s the equivalent of a blind person who has been blind since birth trying to explain a color to a person who has been blind since birth.

I have been interested in this subject since I was a little kid.

In my first post, I was talking about what you are here. In psych, the different functions of sections of the brain are called the "Modular Theory of the Brain" meaning there's different "modules" that handle different functions. What we don't know is how the info stored in those modules comes together to form ideas and memories.

Even more complicated than all of that, we have no idea what a memory is, to begin with.

Do you know why they give that speech when you get on an airplane explaining how to use the seatbelt?

They do it because there are people on the plane that are too stupid to understand how to use the seatbelt. A chimpanzee could figure it out. They cant just come out and say it so they call it a safety brief.

Knowing this, do we really thing downloading consciousness is even remotely on the horizon?
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

People do not realize how stupid and uninteresting many people are because they have limited life experience.

It would not be worth keeping the consciousness of many. The typical thought process of most people is eat, drink, get money, and repeat.

Definitely not in our lifetime. Mayb several generations to come. We always over estimate tech advancement. Remember the Jetsons thinking in the year 2000 wed have flying cars? And meanwhile were taping diapers to our faces and eating ass in 2022.

At some point it is physically within the real of possibility to perfectly recreate synapses in the brain with enough detail to emulate what makes a person a person and download these "memories" and connections but the amount of detail and sequences is close to infinite and we probably need some incredible computing and chip computing/printing capacity to create these imo

Downloading a persons consciousness would only mean that you now have a copy of yourself. Its not as if they are sucking out your memories and putting it into a new vessel. There will never be a way to transfer thoughts, I do think it would be interesting though if doctors could somehow attach a cloned organic copy of a human and somehow transfer that way. Kind of like linking the brains together, but with a brain that has no memories of any kind. A second self if you will. At that point you detach the older used body.

"Through brain scans, we now believe that each memory is spread over many places in the brain. This is called the distributive model. Memory does not simply consist of individual cells storing separate facts but a shared system requiring many different neurons. One advantage of spreading out information is that, if one brain cell dies, the information is not permanently lost. Using multiple neurons alleviates this problem."

How would you even be able to attempt a download of information stored that way. You'd have to access billions of individual cells and somehow index all that information accordingly.
