I got one of those kits for Christmas a few years back and never sent it in after reading about police departments getting access to this information. That and the people that run all of these companies seemed shady based off of what I could find on Wikipedia.

Think the main danger is people panicking because their results show all kinds of horrendous illnesses they might have or could get, when the reality is the chances are very low in reality. The other one being how they handle your DNA & who they allow access of it to. Biological weapons sounds ridiculous-they knew what ones killed humans decades ago.

Fuaaaak. I did it about 8 years ago because my grandmother was into genealogy. Found some cool info about cousins I never knew I had and where my ancestors may shave come from, but stopped giving a fuk a few days later. Probably would not do it today knowing what I know, but what’s done is done. Hopefully they don’t clone me and use him as a Manchurian candidate.

I was just going to post something like this!

I was watching Dateline and they said they figured out a criminal's DNA from inmate DNA records...and other sources.

I figured that "other sources" has to be DNA ancestry companies selling this info to the cops.

I am okay with catching criminals but not by lying to me about it.

I have always wanted to do a DNA test but figured they would sell them to insurance companies, etc and so I never did.

No, cops either make a request for it if they have a suspect, or if denied by the company they then upload their DNA samples off victims to the site to get a hit & then obtain a warrant for the individual if they are still alive.

It has solved some huge cold cases in recent years-The Golden State Killer/Rapist who turned out to be a former cop for one. It is usually a young relative gets arrested for drink driving or uploads their DNA to a genome database that is leading these criminals to be caught.
