I went to California last week.

I flew into LAX last week and was surprised how "different" it was. My kids were at a camp out there in Lancaster. That was a depressing area. I then went to Santa Barbara and was blown away at everything. While it was 101 in Lancaster, it was 64 in Santa Barbara. How did you Cali bros pull that off? I liked Santa Barbara. We ate at Chad's (no homo) and went to the courthouse. I also visited Walt Disney's grave on the way out. I flew back Saturday. I had 72 hours on the ground there. Did I see everything I needed to see?

Santa Barbara is its own isolated community where rich White people live.

Lancaster ( and all of the Antelope Valley) is where the poor ethnics live. Traffic is always bad for the poor, unfortunate souls that call the Antelope Valley their home - the only way in or out is the 14 freeway which is always backed up. There are no jobs out there, so everyone has to commute into the SFV for work.

Yep Lancaster and Santa Barbara, definitely saw everything. They are over 100 miles away so of course the weather is much different. Coastal cities are much cooler in temperature.

Lancaster is a dump in the desert where people who get priced out of LA move. No one would willingly choose to live there.

Santa Barbara is really cool though.
It is the current year.

Bro if you saw only Lancaster and Santa Barbara of California that is epic in itself. Been here my whole life, it's so much better and worse, north to south.

After a month in iceland and the baltics I flew to San Francisco and the amount of ugly freaks and weirdos there is jarring. Ugliest population on the planet.

There were "signs" in several of the establishments requiring masks. Fortunately, I'm from Mississippi and can't read so not a mask was worn. But seriously, very few people had them on. I didn't wear one in the airport in NO, LAX, or on the plane which isn't required anymore anyway. Yet, some folks were in an absolute panic because their masks were not fitting etc. Strange group of folks, those maskcels.

Whew that's a short trip. I was there last weekend too visiting home for a baby shower. I miss the weather but don't miss the traffic. Not sure If I can cope with the traffic now if I were to ever move back.

I've always loved Santa Barbara. What were the gas prices like there? It was always higher than other areas.

Pleasantly surprised with gas prices, comparatively speaking of course. It's still like 5 dollars a gallon more than I'd want to pay. We rented a convertible 2017 SS Camaro, so it needed 91 octane. Right outside the airport and in LA, it was like 6.99 or something. When we got to Lancaster and then to Santa Barbara, it was a dollar less per gallon. Leaving Santa Barbara, there was a wreck. Stop me if you've heard that before. And of course it added 45 minutes to my drive back to Lancaster from Santa Barbara.

I also forgot to mention I went to the Santa Monica pier Saturday. That place was stupid crowded. I ate and decided against riding anything because it would've been 30 minutes to do any of it. No thx Jeff.

There are pockets of really nice upper class areas here n there. Definitely a lot of chit-holes tho.

Lol I grew up near LAX. Lived on the boarder of Westchester and Inglewood. We never had a TV because it always got stolen.

One thing that’s nice in my area (Temecula) is the wineries and hot air balloon festival they have every year. Old town has lots of cool restaurants.

I'd normally say you should have gone to Venice Beach, but I understand it's turned into another homeless camp.


Moved out in '05 after 25 yrs and don't miss it one bit. Lot's of beautiful places, but you have to fight 10 million people when you get there. Not my cup of tea.

If I had to live in California, I'd try to live in Santa Barbara or SLO. Or north of SF. Maybe even San Diego area, but probably not. I have family in LA suburbs. Cool to visit and would have been my taste in my 20s, but not my taste anymore. I've also had numerous friends live in CA for a few years at a time, spent a week at a time for weddings, or just to visit. Basically spent some time in every place along the coast from SF to LA (and some time inland), only spent a few days in San Diego though.

The places in between SF and LA seem like the sweet spot.

People are all sorts of extra in airports. I've only flown a few times since Covid started and I've seen more face shields at them than I have everywhere else combined.

LA in general has banned tents and such

they're not allowed anymore, obviously there's still some but it's miles better than it used to be

That's pleasant and surprising! Usually Santa Barbara area surcharges their gas prices. (At least that was the case when I had friends going to UCSB)

91 was 6.79 in the area I was in. I had this whack hideous mustang as a rental. I never wanted to own one before but after that rental I def don't want one now. It rides like a wooden rollercoaster that's about to be put out of commission. At least there is perfect weather to sit through the extra 45 minutes.... glass half... full? lol
