Just dropping a cold hard truth ITT, 200k is the new 100k
If you want to live a traditional middle class lifestyle in a medium cost of living place like Phoenix, you need to be making ATLEAST 200k USD/yr.
- 200k a year will barely afford a 3 br house, slob wife, 2 kids, utilities, healthcare and food-
260/300k a yr minimum if you are living in a hCOL place like CA/NY
in b4 people who make less but have cars and houses under credit to anesthetize the feeling of being poor

I actually agree with this IF you do not already own a home.
If you DO already own a home, and bought it cheap, you could live the same lifestyle as someone making ~100k
---
Most people fall into the second category, so they are going to call you delusional. But for the first category, this is absolutely the case.

I make 86k and my wife makes 100k. We have one kid and another due next month and I feel like we live in the upper middle class here in Boca Raton, FL. Just lol at thinking you need 200k to be middle class. Anyone who thinks that doesn't understand finances.

Overall, middle-class incomes are defined as an income that starts at two-thirds of the median household income and has an upper range that is twice the income of the United States median household income. The middle class is always a range, and always a median at the same time, and is where you will find the average income of families in every country.

I make $110k base in LCOL. Closer to $132k gross after bonuses, not factoring in the overtime pay which can bring it to $150k+.
$132k 2022 is worth $65k in 1990, $85k in 2000, $108k in 2010.
All 4 of those numbers are still higher than the average and median household pay in my area for 2022, srs. And therefore definitely more than the average/median of individual income.
I don't have data to look at that's newer than 2020. But in 2020 the cut off for middle class in my area was $135k. So especially if you factor in the overtime I get, I'm probably at the very upper-end of middle class, or otherwise at the lowest end of upper class.

Agreed.
The dollar simply does not go as far as it used to.
The dollar simply does not go as far as it used to.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

This is objectively false. $200K puts you in the top 5% of income easily, especially if we're talking individuals. $200K isn't middle class - it's probably at least lower upper class.
What's correct is that the standard of living in America has decreased for everyone. Ameribros don't realize how good we had it, but when I was growing up, you could literally be a C student, graduate with some bullchit degree, and get a decent-paying job (inflation-adjusted) that could get you the two car, white picket fence life. This isn't the case in 99% of other countries, which is also why so many people had been trying to immigrate to the US. An easy example is that in my family, my dad is the least intelligent of his brothers/our close relatives, but I had easily the best QOL growing up compared to my cousins just because it was so easy to live well once you became a US citizen.
The reality is that life in America has reverted to the mean of everywhere else in the world. What that means is that you have to fight tooth and nail like they do in India/China to get a well-paying job that gives you the lifestyle we took for granted. You now have to be that A student to have a shot at what a C student could get back in the 80s/90s/early00s in America.

You can't just compare people based off of household income like that
Most americans own their own homes, and most bought in the past when homes were far cheaper, and have a comparatively small housing expense. For most households, 200k is far more than enough.
But a young household who rents and is looking to buy a home and start a family will have drastically higher expenses than most, and 200k sounds about right for most metros for this household
There's two different americas out there. People who bought their own home in the past, and those who didn't

I'll be getting close that amount if that 4.6% increase for government workers passes the Senate.... Which I won't be holding my breath, they will probably negotiate down. In the end we've lost $$ even with that increase due to inflation. Our union really fukd up with not looking to get a bigger increase when we had the chance during Bidens first couple years and now we're gonna be stuck negotiating with a likely Republican president's admin who won't be as "pro-union".
But OP is sort of right, depending on where you live. 200k a year is living upper-ish middle class nowadays. Especially if you have a new family. Myself and other newly ATC's are still renting (house or a townhome) and saving for that house we want in the location we want. It's weird. Bunch of us are all making 150-160k as a base salary and still feel like we gotta save for another year to get what we want

It’s more doable as a single guy but you still won’t be saving a ton of money or getting ahead
200k is about 12k per month after taxes
Mortgage/rent - $4000
Food - $800
Car expenses including gas, insurance, pmt etc = $2000
Internet/cell phone - $300
Going out ($400 a week) - $1600
Vacations (4 per year at $2500) - $830/mo.
$9530
Leaving you $2470 a month to save
If you had kids that $2470 would go to them and you’d be living pay check to pay check

In Mexico the standard family unit is working husband, stay at home wife, 2 kids, rich or poor that is it. There start to be some tweaks depending on income, ie. the upperclass kids go to private schools to learn english while the poor kids get educated by the government, etc

600k where I live (Toronto) will get you a 500 sq foot condo. For a decent 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house you need 2 million dollars which translates to an 11k mortgage pmt for 30 years. So actually my numbers are massively understated and you simply can’t own a home on 200k in Toronto and have to rent.
And Toronto isn’t anything like NYC, London, San Fran etc
So my numbers are probably understated.

Sure there was a time when the world needed more humans to improve quality of living. That threshold was passed so long ago. It's too bad people will never wake up this to make the tough decision because "passing on muh genetics" is so important to everyone. Most of you are scum. Your genetics aren't worth more than a sack of flaming dogsh*t. Why not contribute something more by abstaining from adding to the population for f*cks sake?
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

In my medium cost of living metro, in my neighborhood, a typical home sold for 300-400k about 5 years ago. Now its about a million dollars
Imagine if you bought 5 years ago, and refinanced at 2.5 percent interest. You'd have like a 1000 dollar mortgage, whereas a newcomer would have like a 7000 dollar mortgage
One couple needs 200k, the other needs like 60k even though we live in the same hood with the same lifestyle
Best lifts:
Bench press: 315x5
Squat: 465x1
Strict press: 205x5
Deadlift: 405x13 (conv tap'n'go with straps)

My neighbor next door sold last year for $850k. Sold within 7 days to a family from San Diego.
Neighbors a few houses down (same floorplan as mine with a different elevation) are on the market to to sell with an asking price of $888k. It's nuts.
Looked up the median income for my city and it is $101k. Blew my mind.

This is the problem with mortgagecel ph aggots like you. You've truly convinced yourself you're in a better place at this very moment compared to the other dude in your scenario. You really aren't. Not at this moment. You've made a decision to be in a better place 30 years from now.
Think of it as an unrealized capital gain in the stock market (except worse because you have to legit wait the 30 years and can't liquidate it whenever you want). That money isn't yours though. You talk about "muh house was bought for 300k is now a million". Bro do you have a million dollars in your hand right now so you can take a nicer vacation? Buy a more expensive car? Pay your kids tuition without worry? The f*ck you do. It's all tied in your house that you're still making payments on.
What a joke. People like you are truly out of touch with reality when they talk about homeownership.
You've set yourself up for a better future. No question there. But right here and now today.. no... you're equivalent to the rentcel paying that exact same amount each month.
