Working Abs directly? Or never
do you hit abs, if so how often, or do you leave it to compound movements and diet?

Used to be no direct abs work crew, but then I started getting back pain from I believe a weak core.

I do cable ab crunches, captain chair knee raises and arm out crunches. All weighted for 3 sets of 10-15 reps, 3x per week.
Thinking about adding those bodyweight youtube ab workout, ones with legit ab exercise. Anyone have success with those or are they just a waste of time?

Have rarely ever worked then directly over my 15+ year lifting career and they are still pretty aesthetic. I also do almost everything unilaterally so I get a good bit of core work in from that. Now that I'm old though, I do reverse squats at the end of every leg day just for general health/mobility.
In summary, I don't think it's necessary to work them per se but can be a good idea if you are trying to bring up a weak point whether aesthetically or from a pain prevention/management standpoint.

Although I do higher reps sometimes. Because I’m older and don’t stick to a strict diet I still don’t have much definition. Been meaning to tighten up but just like bs food too much.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.

Definitely. I do PPL end legs with abs.
Dragon flies for reps (w/weight on feet)
Dragon fly holds
Crunches
Planks
Windshield wipers
Ab machine
Stomach vacuums
I always do a dragon fly variation + stomach vacuums, and depending on the day I add another of the above exercises

Everyone I know when a great set of abs works them.
Even if you have too much fat to see them a little core work probably can't hurt. Planks. Side planks. Hanging leg raises. Etc. I personally think my low back feels a lot better when I have a strong core.
I don't put a ton of weight on and mainly just focus on isometrics or the squeeze with my bodyweight.

I haven't done hardly any direct ab work for a decade now. I'm thinking about adding it back in soon though for core strengthening purposes since I'm getting to old to squat super heavy anymore

A couple sets after every workout. I skip them if I'm not feeling it. Ends up being 8-10 sets per week

Started doing high rep work every day.
Don't care what the science says, my abs were behind and now they're catching up quickly.
Dat dare Zabo Koszewski/Frank Zane method of just do abs every day for an hour. Over the course of a cut and 50,000+ reps, you're going to be ahead of the average person who does a half assed ab workout with 4×12 cable crunches and leg raises
