I think they do, but they call it something else. Nietzsche famously said "God is dead" in reference to how godless society has become. People need a guardian or master to serve as most people are not capable of living 100% autonomously. As long as they have some semblance of comfort provided by a superior, they will be happy.

So although they don't know the extent of their servitude, they take comfort in knowing big brother is watching over them, keeping them secure and safe from their own thoughts
