Btw, property taxes are not much. I don't know why guys on here make that to be some huge amount lol. For me, its around $240 a month; broken down into biweekly payments of $120 each.

in my area the average property taxes are like 11k-12k a year in a rural part of north jersey not even some affluent rich area where its well over 20k a year

Lack of acceptance. It's a hard cawk to swallow to admit you're blowing a large majority of your earnings on nothing, basically paying someone else's mortgage. It's easier on their fragile ego and emotions to delude themselves and willingly pull the wool over their own eyes. You can see it from a mile away. Maybe they'd get out of that situation if they'd accept long enough to enact a viable plan to make more money and find something decent they can one day own. They're also most likely scared of the alternative too. It's a lot easier to just pay rent than to find a place and have a mortgage. You obviously don't understand the real costs of homeownership (opportunity costs, maintenance, renovations, interest, ...)
Unless you are treating real estate as a business there really isn't that much difference compared to renting for your average joe

I bought my own appartment a few years ago and it was mainly because of this same peer pressure you are experiencing.
Currently need to rent it out because I need to move ASAP (need to switch locations for work) but the rent only covers about 60% of my mortgage.
Belgium for example is a dream to rent (around ~ € 1.000,00/m rent for a +/- €350.000,00 house/appartment)


I don't know the specifics of the UK housing market but I advise you to not just buy something "to avoid renting".
Buying is in general more favorable for lower income brackets where people can't save and invest their money after rent.
