My son is going to be 'sick' from school tomorrow and we will be joining me for a day of awesomeness on track with my friends.

Kids grow up fast, make the best of the time! Feel lucky to be able to share stuff like this with him.

A lotus is particularly tight. You can drive them up to about 6'4, but on track you need a helmet. That would be pretty tough. The pedal box is quite narrow. I have to wear narrow shoes diving the car. On track, I wear driving shoes. If you are size 12 or larger feet, you probably wont have room. No double clutching a modern trans w/ synchros my friend.

At 6'3, even a lambo would be tight with a helmet. Best bet is a 911 which is taller. Cheaper cars, something like a GTR is a formidable track weapon. Or even Camaro ZL1 1LE. Older

BMW can be a cheaper option, but expensive to fix.

On the cheapest route, there is the Miata which can be super fun. MANY MANY run spec miatas and have just as much fun as guys in ferraris.

My 2 are enough for me. I do feel lucky to be able to share this stuff with him. I never did anything like this growing up. We were not 'poor', but my dad was an electrician and my mom stayed home with us. Enough money to play sports and that was all I ever got to do. No complaints at all. Just great to be able to do better for your kids.

Man you got so much time. Enjoy it! It goes so fast. I never pictured I would ever be doing anything like this...ever. Funny how life happens. It is because of my friends that I did it. They encouraged me to come out and try it AND to bring my son. My son is the only 'kid' in the group we run with. Next youngest guy is probably 25. Kids are not really allowed on race tracks (unless they actually held a professional race license) . But having good friends who rent out full tracks makes this all possible. Once he can get an actual license, we can travel a little more.

But with our small group, we get to run some amazing places like VIR (Virginia international raceway) I dont know how many 'kids' have gotten to race the full course, but my son had two full days on track there at 14, and hopefully 3 this year at 15.

Really such a fun thing to share with him. He has a medical condition which caused him to stop playing soccer this year. It is a chronic reflux issue which has really bothered him the past 3 years. Last year was the worst and we decided playing was not worth it as the exertion of soccer made him sick for days and he just could do it. So the car stuff is our thing to look forward to.

I will check them out. Yea, I have kind of gone car crazy a little lately. It is something I was into when I was younger, but then really did not give a sh!t about cars when I was flying. My son is the one that got me thinking about cars again. It is great to share this passion and hobby with him. We have both become avid F1 fans also. Fun to watch the races together and he sends me funny clips when he is at school...etc. Just a great thing to share with your son for me!

Sorry I was in bed early last night for 530 wake up call. Today we were at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw SC. Nice 2.3 mile circuit. VERY technical not a lot of high speeds at this track vs something like VIR. Really pushing the limits of handling.

The new springs transformed the car. BUT it is much more sensitive to lifting throttle in a turn (which my son found out the hard way by doing a 360 (but he kept it on track) Going to see if I can pull video later from Garmin.

With the new springs, the car will rotate with just a throttle lift and the on throttle the car just feels more and more planted going through the corners.

With new setup, I beat my time from April by almost 3 seconds and dropped my variance from 3.01% to 1.03%. The car just feels so much more controllable, but at the same time dynamic. Some might call it 'twitchy', but it is totally predictable and using the weight transfer was something that I figured out by my 2nd lap. Just so fun to drive!

A new guy joined us today. He brought out a new Lamborghini Squadra Corse. INSANE to see this out there running with us. I think he is going to join us at VIR for two days in the fall if he is back in the states. He is shipping the car to europe and going to race some historic tracks over there for fun. SUPER cool guy!\

My son took the top off the car to run 'parade laps'. He is too funny, but as of right now he cant drive alone on the street. So he took top off and cruised around the track. (we take an hour break at lunch)

There is a full steel roll bar right behind our heads concealed in the body work. It is connected directly the monocoque tub with diag bars that go to the rear. Lotus built these things the same way one might construct a F1 car prior to full carbon fiber construction. The entire chassis tub weighs 150lbs. Pretty amazing cars.

Wow those were some awesome years. We are new the F1 thing. Really enjoying it, getting in deeper. We have the F1 subscription so we watch all the races and quite a bit of practice and qualifying. Just try to avoid social media if we are watching a race late, so we dont see the winner!

So got a few vids. First is my best lap of the day. With new springs car was like a different car. I think as I become used to it, I can extract a lot more. Very excited.

2nd vid is me shooting my son driving. Just fun stuff. He keeps his envelope pulled in pretty tight and does not push as hard as I do. He shifts about 7000-7500, where I will wind to redline at 8200 just because with the supercharger, and level of power I am pushing it is really easy to pop a motor. He is also not as comfortable braking as hard as I do. I have the ABS disabled, and running track pads it is easy to lock up the car. But heck, he is 15 and out doing this so I am letting him expand his envelope as he is comfortable.

Also a little clip of him lifting and showing what happens when you do so in a car sprung this tight for the track. He did a 180, but corrected and kept on track. In the following pic you can see how common this spin is at this location. (look at all the skid marks going off track there. You should be all the way on the right exiting the turn) If you sping and dont correct right, you are in the grass and surly hitting the tire wall. Where I drew red arrow. GREAT save and I am proud of him.

People laugh that I am so calm when he spins out. I am a certified flight instructor in helicopters and spent many hours of people trying to kill me. 1-I knew we were not going to die. 2-I had already resolved as long as number 1 did not happen, I was OK with what ever the outcome of the day was.. Even if that meant crashing the car. I have never played the 'safe' moves in life. Just tried to balance risk/reward.

I am sure my son will tell his grandchildren after I am gone how I let him drive a 860hp Lambo on a race track at 14 for his first time driving a car. Life is short. Live it. COVID made me say fuk you even more because my kids lives were made miserable. I made it my job to find ways to have fun.

Not at all. Kicking a soccer ball in the yard, throwing a baseball, building a model car. All of those things kids will love and ALWAYS remember. It is not the $$ attached to a moment. It is the moment. However you make it. Yes this is not a cheap hobby, but the relative cost is not what makes it enjoyable. It it the packing, the getting our stuff ready. The travel, the friends, the events, and ALL the moments in between. It could be fishing and be the same bond.

Dont get distracted by the cars. For those of you that dont have kids, it is YOUR time they want. YOUR attention. Caring about their lives and letting them be a part of your life. Lots of kids become teens and have no connection with their parents. That is the parents fault. The parent/child relationship is a dynamic one. Always changing. You get to be a real superhero in the eyes of your kids for a while, but eventually they will judge you like no one ever will. And they KNOW all your sides, even the ones many dont see. If you pass that test, and they still respect you, then I would say you have done a great job.

Thanks man! The lotus is a lot of fun, and has been great as my son and I have done the work ourselves. I have a spare motor and trans in the garage. Winter project is high boost motor build (with internals), and we need to upgrade the trans w/ stronger gear sets. Going to really bring this thing to life!
