I work as an EMT. Last week I had a patient that was a pedestrian hit by a car and thrown 50 feet. There was brain, open fractures, and pools of blood and a trail of blood from our ambulance to the emergency room. I had to pressure wash all the blood in the ambulance afterword. I was pretty much unphased and think it was an awesome experience.
But not once have I opened a havoc or shock video and I can't stand the thought of doing it.
Now why would that be?

When you're getting paid and adrenaline is flowing, you forget what's going on.

How does the film industry get away with it. As long as it's not real?

Might be because in the videos, you usually get to see what happened to cause the extent of the injuries, whereas in our jobs, you’re just seeing the end result, or at least that’s how it is for me.

An awesome experience? Not surprised you'd say that after watching those trash EMTs on those reality shows.

Never been bothered by either luckily, seen some sht at work and not everyone can handle it. Honestly the most annoying thing, callous as it sounds, is I hate getting blood/vomit/fluid all over me, usually ruins a uniform and those aren't cheap.

Maybe because when you are dealing with a situation IRL you have somewhat dissociated from your emotions and you are "in your head" focused on completing tasks and taking care of business.

I really don't like gore and violence, but at least in fiction I like action. So I can read scenes in books that have a lot of action and enjoy it, but I don't think my brain colors in the "violence and gore" very much.

On film it depends on the day a bit and also how the violence is presented- like is it cartoonish or is it realistic? Do you see people suffering?

IRL I think my brain just puts up a "no go zone"...meaning I don't think about it. My last gruesome experience was when my brother nearly had his hand cut off with a sword and a police officer was nice enough to come to the house and get me to take possession of my brother's vehicle so that they would not have to tow it.

There was a lot a lot of blood all over a sidewalk and up a driveway. I had to sort of just stand around while the emergency workers at the scene were doing clean up and taking pictures and stuff before I could drive the truck back to the house. Not the time to be freaking out, so I just didn't think about it.
