Are workplace environments getting worse?

So I met up with some people over the weekend who told me they were either going to quit their jobs or had already done so. Reason being is they say the office culture is complete ****, the managers are assbags, etc.

Then I got to thinking a lot of former co-workers I keep in contact with have been moving between jobs for the exact same reason.

Out of all the people I've heard switching jobs in the last year, only two of them moved on because they found better pay, a promotion, job is closer to home, etc. Everyone else quits because they are fed up with the chit work environment.

Have you noticed things getting ****tier out there? Specifically the interpersonal elements of the workplace

Peoples' expectation of work is changing. 22-25 year olds especially will no longer put up with chitty work cultures (whereas their parents had to because remote work wasn't a thing, and it was expected for you to deal with all sorts of unpleasant chit at work). There are a lot of large businesses whose entire model revolves around attracting top 22-25 year old talent, burning them out working 60+ hours per week in the office (in a toxic, hypercompetitive environment), and then relying on their reputation to keep attracting the next waves of top talent. Those businesses are going to have a hard time in the new work economy where young people won't sacrifice their lives for work (srs)

NYC checking in - people are desperate to work, and keep their jobs.

Even internships are hyper-competitive here. The "man we're going to quit, work sucks" is the Gen Z-ish cohort, who get their panties in a bunch when management point out that a memo was poorly written, and even show why with track changes and comments.

Also, too busy posting on Reddit and chit posting elsewhere to get assigned work done. There's so much cope in the midst of expectation - I guess folks used to getting 1000s of likes on Tik Tok have abrutalreality check when they enter a work force that doesn't care?

Absolutely this, I worked in big law for 4 years and this was the entire model. Bring in the peak talent, pay them a lot (but a whole lot less than was being made), burn them the ground and -literally- drive them out after 5-6 years. Rinse and repeat. The law schools were part of this feeder system too because it tracked only graduate employment and the system said being at these firms was the best for the schools rankings.

I think it has been about the same for the last 15 years but more recently it has finally swung to become more of an employees market so people are less likely to put up with it.

They have definitely got worse in terms of woke bullchit though.

Left for more money and more growth. I have not seen a negative shift in culture or management.

Most quitting right now are doing so reportedly for growth. 1 to 1, I wouldn't be surprised if they're reporting something different. "There's no room for me to grow here!" sounds better than "My boss is a crying retard"

It's been abysmal since Covid. Every fast food place is horrible now. Places can't seem to hire anyone or keep anyone as turnover rates are very high. Morale is low. Management afraid to manage people. I've been working for over 15 years and never seen anything like this.

It does. And starting with that in any negotiation lets the persons responsible for hiring play harder ball with starting salary/perks.

I'm considering a move, and am slowly putting out feelers through trusted friends. There's a lot I could say about my current employer that would shock others, but better to just let that die. To anyone I talk to, I'm not really looking to move, heh.

Not so much, but...being understaffed with really oversized workloads (full of countless messes) and higher ups regularly coming up with stupid shyt that makes it harder and harder to actually get things done - has been my experience as of late and it does get aggravating. Interpersonal in the sense that you're meaning, things are fine - but I also do WFH most of the time.

Haven't noticed because I'm not a normal mofo. Made my own 4 day schedule, wear tshirts/joggers/hoodies daily, take long lunches, etc and never a word from my bosses because they know they can't lose me (dfs). As far as coworkers, most are ****g0ts and that'll never change
