How soon after working out do you have to consume protein for full benefit?

Just worked out with a buddy and when we finished he kept insisting that I suck down some protein or else my muscles wouldn't grow as much. Is there actually a time window that you have to eat/drink protein after working out?

I keep a pre-made protein shake in a Yeti cooler in my car, I drink it as soon as I'm done lifting.

Protein timing doesn't matter. Just get it in.
