I have never tipped on takeout but always tip 20-25% when dining in. Why should I tip someone standing behind the cash register for doing their job?

Tipping should be for a service - haircut, server when dining in, etc. Pretty soon Mcdonalds going to be asking for tips just for using the drive thru.

Am I a jerk or is this normal to think?

Tipping on take out is for suckers. Don’t do it. They provided nothing of value needing to be tipped. Tipping is dine-in only.

I feel pressured to tip when the bit TIPS jar is right in my face as I'm pulling out my credit card. Too bad I don't carry cash with me. However, now we have the "TIP 20%" thing popping up before you hit "Enter" so they found a work around for people who don't carry cash.

I give patel a couple bucks for driving the food over to me, who cares

I tip take out when I do it at abnormal restaurants.

Ie, people dining inside with button ups and ties etc..

Or other restaurants where takeout isn’t the norm. And I tip full amount.

But I’m more well known at most of those restaurants for being a restaurant owner so reputation gets heavily considered. I am annoyed at the occasional takeout order at my spot and hope others do the same, but again don’t really care because I just split takeout tips to the employee party or pizza day fund.

I leave a European tip for regular take out spots.

For all the cultures Americans who insist Europeans don’t tip, it’s actually quite common atleast in Paris when I lived there, at coffee shops etc, but it’s normally like a very very small amount, maybe a buck or two for a full meal, bit of change for a coffee etc..
