I've already lived 1984; why would I want to read about it?

Yes, great book. Also hopefully instills a need in the reader to unplug from the matrix

Rather ironic that while writing it the author was dobbing people in to the government.

Orwell was a pretty complex dude. For one thing, he was a staunch lifelong socialist, which few people who have read and like his works have any idea about.

I read it again 6 months ago.

I'm honestly shocked liberals haven't tried to ban it.
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

Agreed OP. I was already starting to lean away from mainstream sheepish thinking and '1984' definitely helped push me further.
While less profound, another I recommend is 'Confessions of an Economic Hitman.' I listened to the audiobook over a dozen years ago and haven't forgotten it one bit. Afterward you'll see geopolitics and all international news differently.

Please don't abuse that word "lifelong" since that's not accurate. His worldview completely changed after returning from fighting in the Spanish civil war. A socialist is incapable of writing something so scathing against socialism and communism as '1984' or 'Animal Farm.'

But hey, thanks for attempting an example of rewriting history. One might even call that Orwellian.

...
“Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.”
Orwell was a socialist to his last breath - Animal Farm being a critique of what he believed to be Stalinism's bastardistation of socialism and 1984 a more generic critique of totalitarianism.

The guy came back from the Spanish Civil War and literally wrote a love letter to socialism (Homage to Catalonia) based on his experience in the anarcho-syndicalist communes there. That was what he believed socialism was - worker ownership and control of production, a lack of traditional hierarchy and bosses, etc. His critique of the USSR eg in Animal Farm was from that entirely leftist, not rightist perspective.

Frank(ly) this is above your intellectual pay grade.

Read about the chit he had to go through with those people just to get Animal Farm published. That alone could make a 500 page masterpiece novel.

The movie of the year for that year was “The Muppets Take Manhattan”. That was seriously the first movie I ever watched in theatre. Like when it first came out. The screen that size was a surreal larger than life experience for me.

When they do officially ban the book, that's when it regains its power amongst the youth.
