He makes fantastic music. My only criticism of him is that some of his works are just slightly modified and rehashed as new.

There is a really good example of this with two movie theme songs that sound very similar. Don't remember which two movie themes they were off the top of my head.

He gets a lot of praise, but I haven't really been blown away by what I've heard from him.

As far as film composers I prefer Basil Poledouris, Jerry Goldsmith, Thomas Newman

Video game composers are a whole different ball game tho, srsly

This is not quite how I expected an interview with Hans Zimmer to end. The composer has worked on more than 100 films, including scoring the likes of The Lion King, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Black Hawk Down and Inception. He’s justifiably feted in the film and music worlds alike. But yes, the chuckling man on the other end of the phone line is happily claiming the theme tune for British TV game show Going for Gold, during an interview wind-down conversation about British TV prompted by his (British) colleague Russell Emanuel.

"Going for Gold? I’m not ashamed of it! It paid the rent and opened up all sorts of doors. I will admit to it: we all have to have our guilty little somethings!" says Zimmer, in a conversation that also includes the unexpected phrase: "I know Les Dawson. Come on, I'm not completely ignorant."

John Williams is the only one alive who comes close to the classical composers.

When Spielberg called him to invite him to compose for Schindler's List Williams replied "I think you'll need a better composer for this" and Spielberg replied back "I know but they're all dead!"

Music purist types will **** on him for making unsophisticated/simplistic stuff especially compared to other composers like Williams.

However his music fits so incredibly well with the films they are in, he just absolutely nails the atmosphere and emotions every time even if they are not considered "high brow" compositions.

Hell, the main Interstellar theme is easy as shyt to play on piano, he doesn't necessarily go for complexity, yet it gets more feels out of me than almost anything produced in the modern era. Hans is one of the GOATs

A lot of people feel Hans Zimmer's influence has ruined modern film music. Instead of providing rich emotional context through melody and motif, modern films oftentimes just stick to BWWAAAAAAM noises and dissonant ******ce. It gets old as fuk.

Zimmer was a lot better back in the day, IDK his stuff is kinda bland IMO. I think what Ennio Morricone did with Western music is a better example of subverting the old-timey "Sweeping Overture" of classic film noir. Hell, even the Mandalorian OST is more interesting than pretty much anything Zimmer has done since The Rock.

Not saying Zimmer is bad, just that there are way more interesting composers out there. But feel free to post his best work to prove me wrong. Just prefer so many others. Basil Poledouris, Howard Shore, James Horner, Alan Silvestri, John Carpenter, Bill Conti, Vince DiCola, etc.

I don't know if he's better than Mozart or Beethoven but he's really good. Without him Intersteller wouldn't have been nearly as good

Going For Gold was the best television game show music ever. Everybody here loved it in the late 1980's to mid 1990's.

100% this.

I saw interstellar 5 times in theaters not just because it was amazing but that music was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in a movie. I don’t know anything about how complex or simple Hans Zimmer’s music is, whatever he’s doing he just nails it better than anyone I’ve ever seen.

If you ever see a film coming out with Chris Nolan and Hans Zimmer in the credits, you better not miss it. See it in IMAX if you can.
