TikTok/Social Media compared to Gambling Addiction

I'm reading a book at the moment called "Addiction by Design". It focuses on how slot machines have been very cleverly and carefully designed to keep players playing for as long as possible. The interesting thing is that for the addict gamblers the draw of the machines is not apparently about winning/losing money, it's the playing itself (of course for the casino it's ALL about the money). Players claim to enter something like a dissociative state where all their daily woes vanish into the machine.

The book was written before TikTok and addictive social media in general but the parallels between the two are obvious.

Slot machines seem different from watching TikTok videos because there is no gambling for money involved but reading this book it seems that the design features have a tonne in common.

Not telling peope anything they don't know (i.e. that TikTok has been designed to be addictive) bu tthought the parallel between modern social media and slots was interesting.

Blah blah blah be an adult and exercise control and discipline over your actions or forever be a Timmy.

It's that easy.

Yes lots of stuff out there made to be addictive if you're a weak minded little bitch who takes zero personal responsibility.

Those companies are banking on plebs like that because there's no shortage, they make up majority of the population.

Social media / smart phones are the addictions that are very rarely talked about, or even considered an addiction. Too much of big tech would lose revenue if it was addressed.

The book 'Digital Minimalism' by Cal Newmport has a section describing how insanely engineered the social media apps are by the smartest minds in the world, backed by some of the highest valued companies in the world. He then goes on to say that you need to understand it isn't your fault your monkey brain is having it's dopamine buttons pushed in such an effective way, but you need to be aware of it and aware of the harm and the pitfall it can be. I think it is underestimated just how much it has shaped society very recently. And for better and worse, we can't put this genie back in the bottle.

Its always wah, ******** made me addicted.

Wahh tiktok this

Just delete the damn app then...

ZERO personal responsibility

This new generation is so damn entitled, like crying about how video games are addicting, social media, etc... You gonna have a bad time with drugs too.
