Bank accidentally deposits $50 billion into wrong account

For four days, Darren James and his family were multibillionaires.

The real estate agent from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and his wife were doing a routine check on their finances last Saturday when they noticed $50 billion had been mistakenly deposited into their Chase Bank account.

"That's not like a one zero error or a two zero error, that's somebody that fell asleep on the keyboard error," James joked. "I was excited for sure. Really surprised how it got there and wondered if I had a rich uncle that gave it to me."

But to his disappointment, it wasn't an inheritance -- just an incredibly unusual error.

Chase Bank restored the family's account to its correct balance on Tuesday, James said.

"We're still trying to figure out what happened, why it happened, how it happened, but we know we aren't the only ones this happened to," he told CNN. "The concern is whether my account was compromised, and the bank hasn't even called me. We haven't heard anything from anyone."

Chase Bank acknowledged the mistake to CNN, but gave a different timeline for when it was fixed.

"We had a technical glitch a couple weeks ago impacting a limited number of accounts. The issue was resolved one day later and all accounts are showing accurate balances," Chase Bank spokeswoman Amy Bonitatibus told CNN.

James said he never considered spending any of the money.

"My moral compass only goes one way and that's the correct way," he said. "There's a big difference between morality and legality. Honesty and good moral character immediately kicked in, we can't do anything with the money. I didn't earn it, it's not ours to spend."

James said if the family was able to keep the money, they would have tried to "bless" others in need.

Lmao at them getting mad when Chase finally corrected it. Taking the moral high ground.

Lol lets be honest If they would've been able to keep the money they wouldn't have "blessed" anyone.

Lol this. Banks won't let you pay or withdraw more than like $50k or $100k a day unless you go to the actual branch and do it through a person.

they should have at a minimum transfered 5 to 10million to a crypto account ASAP and bought bitcoin and the held it in cold/secure storage. Then close the account and ignore any emails or letters from Chase. They wont want to make a big deal about it because they phucked up and would call attention to themselves and its not enough for them to need it.

Many years ago I put a whole bunch of empty envelopes in the atm to fill up my account with money. I ended up giving it back and they never pressed anything further. Had to embarrass myself and apologize to the bank. Those stupid teen years.

It was never their money since there was an obvious trail leading to their home/address.

Had somebody found 50 million in cash somewhere remote where nobody saw them take it THEN they could say they were multi-millionaires until they decided to hand it back out of good morals.

lmao this, people have no clue you can't just transfer or buy millions worth of things just by walking into a store and tapping your card against the reader or splurge on 1000BTC in 5 seconds.

Definitely have to sit down and decide if you are OK with leaving the country and everyone behind when you see that kind of money. If you didn't have a great family situation, I think the best idea has already been discussed (buy Bitcoin, transfer to hard wallet, leave country). Trying to stay in America after stealing some of it would never work.
