Why are people so sympathetic to the homeless?

No rent/mortgage/property tax, utilities, maintenance, most don't work, so no responsibilities and on vacation all of the time. Then some want to take money from someone who works 40hrs a week and pays rent/mortgage, utilities, taxes, all of their own stuff, and take more of their resources they produced to give it to the homeless.

I'm in a conservative part of Texas where there are no homeless people wandering the streets.

The police here treat beggars and bums like criminals.

IMO it depends on your personal experiences with homeless people and your own financial history.

In the US homeless tend to fall into:

- addicts/alcoholics
- crazy people
- people dealing with unfortunate circumstances

So the first two don't get much sympathy even though you could argue that both stem from mental illness of some kind. The last one normal people can relate to if they have also had some hard times themselves.

Most homeless are not chronic/permanent homeless and a lot of homeless people are not sleeping on the streets but are sleeping in cars or couch surfing...they don't have a home, but that doesn't mean that they aren't trying to improve their situation and don't have work.

Personally the group that I feel the most sympathy for is young people w/crummy parents who are on their own with few resources at a younger age. The foster system is kind of crap like that and I've considered doing some work in that area- helping older foster kids transition into independent adulthood.

I just ran across this in the past week. The gal seems like kind of a mess herself and seems to not have her head on straight.

Her "boyfriend" lives with "room mates" which are his wife and kids and he has cars and money, but he just can't help her out so she has been sleeping in her car at his apartment. She is young [19] and naive and stupid.

But she is working- two jobs actually.

I used to have sympathy for the homeless, the addicted, and the impoverished. But with more life experience I don’t have any sympathy

One time I used public transit to commute into downtown for work for about a year. My experience with them on transit and also while walking around downtown made me not only lose sympathy but develop an acute hatred for them

It's a different subject, and a deep one at that. What so many foster kids go through is horrible. Not that many of them end up homeless although a lot end up in prison.

A lot of homeless are just strung out drug addicts, even if they aren't doing drugs anymore, after several cycles of addiction it leaves their brains fried and they are unable to properly function. Especially meth, if somone has ever been a meth addict, there will be signs. Usually you can tell by their facial expressions and the way they move. Mentally they seem rattled. Have that caged animal look to them.

I have zero sympathy for them and never have tbh. Not in a heartless sense but from all my interactions and from all of what I've seen it's mostly self inflicted and they are in the position their actions put them. Not my problem.

I have a hard time feeling sympathy for them because a large portion of them just straight up abuse alcohol/drugs daily and/or they choose that life.

Catholic charities where I live are really well organized and funded. Basically the only reason homelessness exists here is because people refuse their help. They absolutely will put people in short term housing. Help them clean up their life. Help them find a job. Then help them transition into long term housing/self sustainability. Thing is. They have to work the program and can't be addicted to alcohol/drugs. A very small portion of our homeless are just completely crazy. But they are also unwilling to get help/consistently take meds and would rather be on the street.


I personally believe areas where the government makes it 'easy' to be homeless will have a much larger influx on homeless people. If you've got shelters housing them, diners feeding them, private charity/organizations feeding them. People giving them money on the side the road. And lax drug laws. There will be a huge influx of homeless.

If a veteran is really struggling to that capacity, it's their own fault. There's so many programs out there to help veterans at need, it's nearly impossible to not have options if needed. It's a sad situation. We seem to have the more productive people delaying having children or just never having any because they put too much energy into chasing $$ or can't find a good partner. Meanwhile people who are irresponsible due to age or just innate nature are still reproducing. So there are so many kids with insufficient parenting [single mom, dual income/no family time] or poor parenting [abusive, neglectful, addicts/acoholics].

And IF the situation goes worst case [economy, excess deaths/disabilities] there will be even more children and young adults out there without the guidance and protection they need to mature into healthy productive adults.

It feels like the story of the starfish stranded on the beach and the little boy who is throwing some back into the ocean.

If you are really that bored with life and feel that there is no meaning and no hope you could try finding some stranded starfish.

No one feels bad for the homeless. Go read the Portland, San Fran, Los Angeles etc Reddit - all of those Lefty cucks are sick of the homeless. Like all low IQ virtue signalers, now that the homeless are on every street corner, threatening, starting fires, doing drugs etc - their sympathy for them has run dry. Now they want to lock them all up in "better run" nut houses.

Being homeless in Arizona is rough. I somewhat understand why they do drugs. Its to cope with the harsh weather we have. I don't feel sympathy when they OD.
