More mid to late 2000s, but yeah I’d say from that era to the early 2010s was the absolute rock bottom for hip hop. People have opinions on mumble rap and drill today, but those kids almost consider themselves a separate genre. They’re just chasing a vibe.

In the 2000s you had rappers that COULD rap CHOOSE to dumb down their sound to appeal to top 40 radio stations and ringtone charts. Thankfully there’s been a major resurgence of quality hip hop since then with Kendrick, Cole, Lupe, Pusha, Griselda, Freddie Gibbs and others now emphasizing lyrics, artistry and messaging once again. I’m glad Nas was wrong. Hip Hop never died. It’s alive and beautiful today.
