Trolls are sociopaths, science now says

Its time to have this discussion. Sociopaths need constant recognition and satisfaction and get it from exploiting and bashing down others. When called out, they will retaliate and many times take it really badly because of the lack of self awareness. This isn’t a small study either. A sample size of 1200 is a good start when dealing with such a small group.

Trolls will defend their behavior by saying “it’s just having some fun”, but the lack of self awareness prevents them from seeing their anti social behavior for what it really is.

Specifically, Canadian researchers conducted two internet studies with over 1,200 people. They gave personality tests to each subject, along with a survey about their internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the Dark Tetrad of personality: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadistic personality.

Indeed, the relationship between this Dark Tetrad and trolling is so significant, that the authors write the following in their paper:

“… the associations between sadism and GAIT (Global Assessment of Internet Trolling)scores were so strong that it might be said that online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists.”

A lot of sociopaths don’t realize they’re sociopaths. This thread was to bring awareness to others, but also people in denial of their own mental illness. They have wires crossed that make it extremely difficult to come to terms with their issues, especially the ones that think trolling is harmless.

Agreed, but understand the other side is different. This is why I simply point out the nonsense and antisocial tactics that people use. I also point out bad behavior that individuals exhibit and the patterns that emerge from that behavior

Pointing out, someone’s bad behavior, bad tactics for arguments, absolutes, projections, strawmen, talking points with no argument…A lot of sociopaths like the anonymous platforms because they are afraid of real confrontation. They see constructive criticism and truth as weapons being used against them, instead of self reflecting and being logical.

Sociopaths do not do as well with adversity.

Psychopaths are different. This is what I would consider to be the “other side” of the cliff. The other side gets into the area of psychopath, who still trolls, but has less of an issue with acceptance. Psychopaths do not need to feel accepted and wanted. They don’t need gratification from others like sociopaths. These are the individuals who are more likely to be in the prison system. Sociopaths, on the other hand, use more manipulation, gossip, reputation, destruction, to make themselves feel and look better.
