FTX is/was a crypto exchange that was run by Sam Bankman-Fried. He also ran Alameda Research which was a hedge fund that invested in crypto.
Alameda was borrowing money from FTX to fund some of their operations. The money that FTX was lending them was made up of customer deposits. That's legally speaking, theft.
Owners of Binance (largest exchange, Chinese) and FTX were rivals, Binance figured out that schit was sketchy, bank run was triggered, FTX and Alameda collapsed.
