Thoughts on Dorian Yates method of lifting?

Basically he does a pyramid style with a last set to failure

So

Bench Press may look like

135lbs x 12 reps

185lbs x 10 reps

205lbs x 8 reps

225lbs x 6-10 reps or until failure

Then do another 1-3 forced reps

I tried this and felt real good. Huge pump and felt like it really sets you up to hit bigger numbers the next time...

Done it in the past I quite like it but it's hard to do it to the intensity he does without a partner/spotter consistently.

Feels good though, I like his ideas around controlling the eccentric and decentric parts of the lift

I'd be more interested in his chemical cocktail than his vanilla lifts

Drop sets are GOAT for growth.

I used to do them all the time, the biggest beneficiary of this method were my delts, they blew up.

Been following his and Mike Mentzer's philosophy on lifting or some variation of it for over a decade. Really like it honestly. I was never into the high volume 70s approach especially as someone who's natural.

Came super close to puking multiple times while doing 3 plate squats with a spotter back in a commercial gym.

a more pertinent question is why he ended up so much bigger and harder than anyone he competed against, given that they all had presumably similar genetics and oj

He was ahead of his time in terms of exercise selection. Ie Dropping squats and bench for the most part. Prioritizing hacks and leg press, cable side laterals.

In terms of intensity techniques a lot of what he says has merit. But like others have said can be hard to duplicate without a spotter.

I've been doing something similar for years. I pyramid up, then back down and then do a triple dropset for every last set.
