Drove a 780 WHP R33 GTR today. [Pics] I now get the 'JDM' thing....

A group of my friends decided to go out today and support a local high school car show put on to support their auto program at the school. I was not going to go as I sustained some wide body damage at our last track event w/ my car and have not had a change to get back in order. My one buddy said, why dont you come up and drive the R33. He warned me it is a tough car to drive. Race clutch and a turbo that hits like a sledge hammer and 780 whp, it is not a car for the timid. But I was happy to join along.

My son tripped out when I told him as he is a HUGE JDM fan. The JDM stuff was a little after my time. When Fast and Furious came out, I was already working starting my business and hustling for a better life. Cars were not on my priority list. Being almost 50, I come from the age where we lusted after 69 Camaros and old Mopars.

Anyway, I now totally 'get' the JDM thing. This car is glorious! Obviously highly modified. Full standalone Haltech ECU, giant turbo and gobs of power has all 4 888 Proxes tires ripping loose when it kicks in all that way up through 4th gear. I did not dare drive the car any faster. Plus, I had no idea how fast I was going since the s****meter was in KM/HAt least that was going to be my excuse if we got popped.

Anyway one of the most fun times driving with my son I have had in a long time. These cars are very special. I have driven modern cars with more power, but there is something RAW and untamed about a car like this. The analog interface with the car is something I would never get tired of. My son said he would rather have this car than a 720s and I can kind of see his point.

My Buddy just bought a 1 of 50 Nismo R33 from Japan. (It is a 1.8 mil car). He told me he may want to see this car go to a new home as he has 3 GTR's already. 2 R33's and a R34 waiting to come in from Canada on a film and advertising permit. This could be a tempting car and one I dont think I would ever grow tired of.

fuarkk at that being 1.8m. I imagine the market of people who can actually afford that and actually want one must be SO small. Like single digit figures, right?

I like the Supras and R34 skylines. Don't really follow much JDM stuff though.

Damn prices for supras and skylines are going up it is insane. Supras now are being sold for 70k-100k, skylines I have seen some go for that amount.

It was weird but your brain starts to adjust. I hold a Certified Flight Instructor rating in helicopters, so I had to learn to fly from both sides. I am sure I would eventually get used to it, but there is surly an adjustment. Mainly have to remember that your gear pattern remains the same and you have bring the gear shift towards you in the gate to upshift. (it is not a mirror). The hardest thing was the turn signal stalk is on the right. I turned the wipers on about 10 times trying to signal a turn

The car I drove is not 'ultra rare'. I think it is worth about 150k. All OS Geiken Motor, trans, the wheels on it are one of only 400 sets made....etc. Might go for more in auction as it is rare but not unicorn rare like the other one he just picked up.

Guy popped the motor, so we have a new built short block and have to put motor back in and trans. Car has sequential trans (which is VERY hard to get for the Lotus) so we are super psyched about that and cant wait to bring out two cars for track days.

You are talking about the most exclusive of cars. I was wrong as only 40 were made. Here is an article of the car. Not the one he bought but same car. It holds unicorn status. He is a true enthusiast. He has a pretty sizeable collection. 5 or 6 cars over a mil. This new GTR I think will be his favorite. But he has 918, SVJ, SF90, GT2RS, STO, and on and on...etc. In those leagues, buying a car like this is probably a better buy than putting it in stocks. Anyway. Great guy and I am happy for him. Was super cool of him to let me take it out and share it with my son! When he gets his car from import I might talk to him about taking the R33 we drove today off his hands. He knows we would give it a good home.

I used to be so into JDM imports back in the day but I can't see spending that much on a limited edition Skyline quite honestly, I'd rather just buy an R33 GTR or even an R34 GTR and upgrade it to be pretty quick on it's feet

The wheels alone on the car I drove today are worth about 20k. Nissan only made 400 sets total. Same wheels were standard on the 2 mil car I posted.

But if you dont know what the stuff is, you might not appreciate it. I was never a real JDM guy, but this car was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had driving a car. My son said he would take it over a 720s and I might agree with him!

Exactly. I was thinking of what domestic auto makers were making at this time. This car had a (stock) 400 hp motor revving to 8000 RPM. Carbon / kevlar body parts. This car was so ahead of it's time, it is too bad they never hit the US markets.

Then the tuners got ahold of them, and you have a car like this. OS Giken motor and close ratio 5 speed trans. Just incredible. I owned a mid 90's vette back in the day. I would not get very excited to drive one again.

Now this car, I dont think I would ever tire of it. It is timeless and very special. I might be becoming a JDM convert!

I am usually more of an R32 fan, I just think they aged the best when it comes to the AWD RB era GTR's, but that is one very clean looking R33, I can tell it's been nicely modified by someone who knows what they're doing. JDM can be really hit and miss depending upon the decisions that were made with modifications. Some of them can turn great cars into incredible cars, while others can take great cars and ruin them.

Always wanted to take one of those for a spin, but they are still just so supremely rare and expensive in the states, heard they're apparently a lot easier to get ahold of in countries like Australia and of course Japan, but I can't say I have ever had anything to do with the car scene in places like that.

But yeah, I've always been a big Nissan guy when it comes to Japanese cars, I just think they got the best sounding engines with great build quality and interesting cars with good lines. Since the Z has always been THE Nissan sports car in the states I have long had a modified Z of my own, my 350Z that I had supercharged about a decade ago. It's held up surprisingly well, but then again I never took it to track days or really raced it, everything I did was simply for my own personal enjoyment to make the car more fun to drive. I went from a Trans Am WS6 when I bought it, so I wanted to go FI to put some muscle under the hood. Considering the weight and how much better it handles, it's always been a fun alternative to an American muscle car for me. While it's not as fast or impressive as it was back when I had it built, having a 350Z with around 400hp is still a ton of fun, and the supercharger gives it a unique sound. Combined with the custom exhaust setup I got it's loud, very loud, but at low revs it isn't bad. It's just crazy when you get on it though, and flooring it in first gear is basically an instant burnout even with great tires, but it's easy to control thanks to the track package which gave me wider wheels and upgraded Brembo brakes. Never bothered to take it further because that would have required a lot more work and modifications, the VQ doesn't have the internals to handle big power.

Yeah, such a better setup for getting power. You don't have to worry about emission and certification bullchit, the internals are already built to handle it, and it's a lot easier to get good result with basic bolt-ons. I think it totally suits the Z's character as well. I mean I love a good NA motor, but the 370Z definitely had the best NA V6 (I essentially got the same engine in my Infiniti QX50 daily driver). I just always enjoyed the sleeper effect of having a supercharged Z because nobody really expects it, especially since I kept my exterior mostly stock.
