Designed what may be my most expensive home ever [PICS]

Among other things, I design homes. I am self taught, like everything else I have ever done. I have been doing a lot of design since 2010 but really started in the late 90's mainly for my own projects.

Over that time I have gotten to do some cool projects. But it has been a while since I have had a client who really wants to build something memorable.

This client is a great dude. We hit it off as he is also a car enthusiast. He paid 3.1 for a perfect lake lot so he could knock the existing 4000sqft home on it down and build what he wants.

This is out there. It has a moat, a waterfall feature entry. Custom 10' tall glass doors all on main level. Anyway, he is not shying away from things even if they impact budget. It is looking like this might hit 10mil, which is by far the most expensive home I have ever worked on.

I finished up rendering for client approval today and if they sign off, it is just producing the construction drawings.

This was a fun one. Of course, him being a Porsche enthusiast, I dropped in a 959,930 and GT3RS

Not bad, but too much wood for my taste. I would personally replace some of the external wood with smooth limestone.

Nice one! You have your own distinct style of design I see, looks somewhat similar to the one you are doing for yourself. Are those bedrooms on top of the garage and if so, what's your thought process on not aiming them towards a lake view but rather the other way? Usually people design all rooms facing the views as far as I've seen.

Took me a while to respond. Last minute 16 hour round trip to pick up a race car for my son. Something popped up and I jumped on the opportunity for Santa to bring something cool under the tree!

He is a Dr and holds a patent for some type of implant. Cool guy. The 'moat' is just decorative and will be all back lit...etc. Just for effect.

Exterior material selections are not final. Just getting actual design down. In the end, unless I have an exact texture file, the outside materials are just for illustration purposes. But the client really likes the light wood ship lap.

Client wants what client wants. Two HUGE glass rooms on rear over looking the lake on far left side (looking at rear of home). Lower one is their gym and upper is his billiard room. They put the kids bedrooms and with no rear view. Lower guest room has a rear view. In the end, client makes the call.

The all wood thing is popular, I am just from the other school. I would personally go with making the centre section limestone (bookmatched 1x2 or 2x3m sections, just like with marble and it's a similar colour to the wood) and the two ends wood or the 1st floor limestone and the 2nd floor wood.

It's individual taste as opposed to criticism.

Google jura wentworth estate. That's my kind of taste. I considered buying it.

That is beautiful! Stunning. LOVE IT! The sandstone has such a warm feel to it also. I dont like wood for maintenance reasons. In the south east, it has to be kept up with. But this dudes budget, I am sure he will have people on it. The sandstone would be a look I would go for. The initial cost might be more, but quickly be a bargain compared to keeping up with the wood.

I loved the exterior. When it came to the interior, I really liked half of it and reallydidn'tlike the other half. With no need for me to move at the time and the hassle involved in ripping half of the interior out, it was a non-starter. May as well just build at that point.

If the half I didn't like had matched the half I did like, I probably would have bought it.

If we had built from scratch, instead of from first fix like we did, I would have used the architect that did Jura.

What software did you use to design this? Looks good. You mention you’re self taught, did you just watch YouTube videos or something to learn?

Looks very much like a bunker. I’m not feeling the design, doesn’t say “lake house”

However, I don't understand why so many expensive homes have totally glass walls.

Why would you want zero privacy like that?

Are they shatter and bulletproof?

Whatever the game plan if crazy people come up to your house and you're just sitting there with them staring at you?

You don't build houses like this in a subdivision, you build them on at least 5 acres with trees along the property line.

My house has 2 sides that are glass and it's set on 40 acres over 1/4 miles from the road, with a gated driveway. People don't randomly wander up to it.

All windows and doors have anti-bandit glass.

The basement is a bunker with a blast door.

I'm more surprised by the fact that some retard out there is willing to spend 10 mill on a mcmansion designed by "some guy" instead of hiring a real architect.

Look up into Carlo scarpa designs and his use of water as I see you're playing a lot with water elements and so on.

I use several bits of software in designing. Mainly I use Chief Architect for the 'design' part. I use other things for some parts if I need the functionality of SketchUp, and rendering is done in TwinMotion which is based on Unreal engine.

I learned to 'build' in the field swinging a hammer. The software aspect of it was something I taught myself long before Youtube ever existed. I can remember sitting down with a 2" thick manual and teaching myself the initial software.

Design is just something that has always been in me. I am not sure how you teach that. The creative aspect is on that I believe is a gift. You can 'teach' a person to play an instrument, but the inspiration and creativity is something that hard to put a handle on. But I think if it is in you, to get out and find outlets to express it!

The home is out on the end of a peninsula and the Yard backs up to a very large lake.

Yep, I am just 'some guy' for sure. I will die and I doubt no one will know my name. But I have developed somewhat of a reputation. I dont advertise and all my work is word of mouth. My main income generation comes from real estate investments. I am very lucky in this world. I have gotten to do many things because people believe that I can. I am just a hustler.

Been hustling for work since I was 23 and went into business for myself. Never looked back and never had a 'job'. I will clean toilets for a living if that is what I need to do. My goals in life are no longer to maximize wealth. Since 2010, I have steered my path towards less is more. I (try) to live a no compromise life. Putting each day first and not get caught chasing anything. Always putting my time and my time with my family FIRST. Designing has been perfect as I have not worked outside my home for the past 12 years.

It's 930 on a monday. I just got up and having my first cup of coffee. My daughter is home from college. My dog is sitting next to me, and I will do some work at some point. I no longer chase MOAR. Having nice things is great, but not the source of happiness in life. Having a wife who is the most incredible woman ever, and having kids that still want me in their lives even as they become young adults is the best success that I can think of.

You are no doubt, correct that I am just 'some guy'. Not wasting my life ever on chasing being 'someone'. I am me, and happy to be that!
