Just call them your friends what the fuk. 100% of men don't call platonic male friends "boyfriends"

this is almost certainly the reason. prolly for her safety women started saying "girlfriends" instead of friends to announce clearly that she was not hangin out with another man.

and usually they are hanging out with another man if they are young and attractive.
