It changes obviously compared to what you make now, but back in the day I used to hear that your quality of life never really improved much after 70k a year. I find that hard to believe now, and would think most people would actually need anywhere from 125-150k a year to feel "comfortable"
New car, new house, domestic+international vacations, new clothes, nice haircut, etc.
For me, I'd say 225-250k right now is the next "goal" that'll come but will REALLY make me feel like I'm living the upper middle class lifestyle. Probably won't happen for another decade to get there cause ATC raises aren't gonna be that crazy until the next contract plus a few more years
Hbu? What's the number that will make you say "alright yeah I'm upper middle class and comfortable"

250k is needed to be considered middle class.
Start there.

Me $135k
Partner $75k
$210k combined income.
We have no kids, albeit we did purchase a $900,000 house.
We're more than comfortable at the moment, add higher interest rates and potentially a kid in the new couple of years and we'll be in a much different financial situation.

In 2023 for a low-med CoL area with zero state/city/county income taxes... I think $90k-100k is the goal for "comfortable." If you want to include vacations and some wasteful spending then make more. You want your rent/mortgage to be below 30% of your take home pay. Making $5.4k/mo ($90k/yr) take home with solely federal income tax, and zero debts, means your rent should be $1650 or below... which is easily doable for a 1 bedroom, and even some 2 bedrooms depending on where you live. Make more than $90k if you want vacations, wasteful spending, and do more than "just have enough to save some."

It depends where you live and how materialistic you are. I mean plenty of people are comfortable in their old car.
You could easily be comfortable at 100k a year so long as you don't get caught in the trap of keeping up with the Joneses.
On the other hand plenty of people make $500K+ a year and aren't comfortable because they fell into the trap of needing new everything and keeping up with the Joneses

in a no income tax state, $80k makes you feel good if you can live cheap.
i had a cheapo apartment, was paying like $725 and my take home for the month was about $5300. feltgoodmane.
if you have some big a** mortgage then id say $120k.

I brought in $140k last year and live comfortably. My mortgage pays for itself plus 500 profit. 2 house lot, rent the 5 bedroom and live in the second house. Find a way to pay your mortgage without using income from your job. Makes a big difference

Less than I make.
I bought the house with cash, so there is no mortgage or rent to pay, but maintenance would still be X amount (as it's an expensive house).
I don't live an extravagent lifestyle, so what Ineedis probably not huge in the grand scheme of things.
