First I had to pass an iq test on a computer. Then I had to pass a regular warehouse knowledge exam on a computer. Then I had to pass a forklift exam on a computer. Then I had to go to another place and pass 3 written exams on paper after watching a video and then had to drive the order picker and the reach truck through cones and pick a pallet and do a put away. The guy was looking for reasons to fail people too. I’ve been driving lifts a long time and this crap had me worried but I did c4 pass. Still have to do orientation and a drug test wherever they send me. Crazy all the stuff you have to do to get a job now

This place is temp so it’s only 18.50 an hour. I think full time is 22.

Dude try to get on with utility natural gas. There is a worker shortage and lots are hiring. Doesn't require any experience and the company will train you. It's a $100k+ job. My location is probably Middle of the cost of living pay scale and my coworkers and I all made 100-120k. I've heard of some areas paying 200k+. It's a great career that requires no experience. Its a good gig, good insurance, 6 weeks vacation pay, will pay 100% for college if you choose, get a work truck and company pays for all the tools. Company matches 100% 401k up to 7%. Get weekends off... not bad.

I’ll look into it. The pay scale down here is still below I think. These jobs used to only pay 10 an hour before Covid. Heck I had a full time union job on a dock and I only made 21 but I had full time benefits. I was hoping they would send me to Volvo. They pay 23 and work 7 days a week. I have a part time job too in the morning before this so it helps. It’s just a C lot of these places now days are so strict with rules and crap it’s like a real prison.

I bet it's more than 21. Plus if you get trained and work a few years, you are high demand and can literally transfer anywhere. My friend transfered to a non union and they gave him a 30k signing bonus and payed for his move. And that was rural Minnesota where cost of living is fairly low. He makes $150k now and cost of living is lower than here. There's a lot of money in energy

30% of people would fail where I used to work because they had to grab the column supporting the roof or overhead protection to turn and look back. That's putting your hand in a dangerous position where your eyeballs aren't looking.

Driving a forklift is actually a lot of fun, I've loaded trucks, done it in a factory and a recycling yard. It's like a puzzle and if you don't get the parts to a line on time, you're gonna hear about it.

It's one position where I don't want to work with someone that's hungover and 1/2 drunk from the night before, worked in a lumbermill where the shift started at 6am and everyone had clearly been drinking till last call at 2am. Much respect but fuk that.

I thought forklift drivers made a lot more than that heck some fast food employees make that now

Checked my local utility, ain't jack chit for jobs except for office stuff. Found out senior mechanics can make $40 an hour. Not bad.

It's different titles for different companies. My company has service technicians (above ground work, appliance repair, gas meters, building gas pressures, locating, emergency call gas leaks, carbon monoxide calls, house and wildland fire response), maintenance crew (distribution pipeline work, repair and installation), transmission technician (transmission pipeline work), and measurement technicians (high capacity meter work) and welders. They all pay about the same hourly rate but welder pays the most by about $5/hr. I'm a service tech and make the most because it has the most overtime due to the workload and on call rotation shifts.

Others areas have journeyman lineman positions where they do everything but weld. They usually require an apprenticeship but pay well during the apprenticeship.

I think mechanics would be similar to service technician. Probably appliance repair plus some but I'm not familiar with that title. What's the job description say?

If you get hired on somewhere as a service tech or something similar you can transfer somewhere as a journeyman and bypass the apprenticeship. Journey man lineman positions usually pay the most.

I remember years ago I applied for a medical warehouse job, they make you take 3 interviews, take a math test, you need to learn how operate numerous types of lifts for a fuking warehouse job.

That’s how it’s always been for me too. This place wouldn’t even let their own employees use the restroom because of Covid. I’m like wow.

Black hills energy tends to hire people with no experience. Both gas and electric. That company operates in like 10 states I believe. If anyone ever gets an interview, talk about team work, helping coworkers, and integrity - doing the right thing when nobody is watching. Those are some key points that are big in the line of work. You work on your own but you gotta be able to carry your own weight. A lot of utility is union work. New guys don't get any more on call shifts than senior guys. Whoever made that comment was wrong. For me it works out 1 weekend every 2.5 months and a week night every 2.5 weeks. Holidays are also rotation so I get a holiday every other year and those are also rotated so you won't get stuck with Christmas multiple holiday shifts in a row. Of course you can take shifts if you want to volunteer. Some places shifts are different, depends on the union and amount of coworkers. But it's all rotation.
