Jury awards $1 million to Oregon woman who was told ‘I don’t serve Black people’

PORTLAND, Ore. — A jury has awarded an Oregon woman $1 million in damages after finding she was discriminated against by a gas station employee who told her, “I don’t serve Black people.”

Rose Wakefield stopped at Jacksons Food Store in Beaverton on March 12, 2020, and saw the attendant ignore her and instead pump gas for other drivers, her attorney said.

When she tried to ask for assistance, he said, “I’ll get to you when I feel like it,” according to Kafoury.

Kafoury said as she was leaving, Wakefield asked Powers why he refused to help her and that he said, “I don’t serve Black people.”

Who are they gonna get this money from? The gas station? Dude that pumps gas for minimum wage?

I mean if they are getting it from the corporation, that would be a nice little scam, how would they prove both parties were in on it

The fact that this is even possible makes the US look like a joke to the rest of the world. Even Russia has a damages cap of $30k for defamation against public officials.

I wonder how you prove this “I don’t serve black people” - did other people hear it? Because to me it sounds like they a not great encounter and at the end the plaintiff hammed it up to “win.”

They have some of the interaction on video. Clearly he said something very offensive to her because she went in to see the manager.

jersey doesn't allow people to pump their own gas by law so they have them.

no idea why it's like that in portland.
maybe just a company thing or perhaps they want to avoid antifa or blm terrorists filling gas cans in bulk?

Correct. Oregon has a ridiculous law to prevent people from pumping their own gas. In rural Oregon, you are allowed to pump your own gas though.
