The vast majority of movies from the last sixty or so years should be watched as if..
...we are watching the dreams, fantasies, exaggerated or idealized recollections, delusions, etc., of one of the main protagonist/protagonists or a periphery participant. Especially more absurd sequences or themes or the whole movie in some cases. Watching a movie with this in mind or revaluating a movie with this in mind makes it makes sense no matter how ridiculous or nonsensical it seemed previously.
In cases where the movie already presents itself as such, then it is already established and no further thought in this direction is needed, or it could be the another character's fantasy, delusion, belief, about how another character was narrating or recollecting the events.
Discuss.

I recently watched 'Room 237'. Bunch of people with wildly different takes on the meaning of the film 'The Shining'. Some of the interpretations were defintely better than others.
But yeah, with a good film you should always think beyond what is presented at face value, and look for larger patterns, metaphors, themes, directors intent, etc..

Films are like time machines. Most from 60s films aren't around anymore. We can view the world as it was long ago.
