How would diversify your retirement investment to survive a bear market?

I’ve seen US index funds took a hit in 2022

How would you survive years like this if it’s your retirement fund and you’re living from it?

Do you diversify with treasuries to hedge against downturns in stock market?

Any thoughts appreciated
