EV Owners Admit To "Logistical Nightmare" Over Charging

No sh*t.

"Neither Easy Nor Fast": Electric Vehicle Owners Admit To "Logistical Nightmare" Over Charging
Owners of electric vehicles are finally admitting that recharging away from home is a total "logistical nightmare," between finding charging stations, and the fact that in the best case scenarios it takes 30 to 40 minutes, and up to two hours, to recharge.

"We're going through the planning process of how easily Maddie can get from Albany to Gettysburg [College] and where she can charge the car," said YouTube personality Steve Hammes, who leased a Hyunday Kona Electric SUV for his 17-year-old daughter, Maddie.

"It makes me a little nervous. We want fast chargers that take 30 to 40 minutes -- it would not make sense to sit at a Level 2 charger for hours. There isn't a good software tool that helps EV owners plan their trips,"he told ABC News.

The report comes on the heels of the Biden administration's announcement that Tesla would open its Supercharger network to non-Tesla owners by the end of next year - a plan which includes 3,500 Tesla fast chargers and 4,000 of the slower, Level 2 chargers.

John Voelcker, an industry expert on EVs and the former editor of Green Car Reports, said this arrangement will allow Tesla to learn a lot about U.S. drivers -- "how you charge, where you drive and what car you have." He does not expect Tesla to commit to additional charging stations.

"Tesla does not want its highly reliable and tightly integrated charging network to be clogged with people whose cars can't charge as fast as Teslas," he told ABC News. -ABC News

To try and cope with an increase in EVs, the Biden administration's 2021 infrastructure law has a goal of installing 500,000 new chargers across the country - as well as dramatically boosting EV sales, by 2030.

That said, Voelcker hasn't seen much improvement in the nation's recharging infrastructure over the past four years, and says he's heard a food of complaints over dead chargers and 'sticky cables.'

"The incentive right now is to get stations in the ground," he said. "It's not making sure they actually work."

Car and Driver editor-in-chief Tony Quiroga, says he's now been forced to wander around a local Walmart in Burbank, California while his Tesla recharges. He's also become a regular at a Mohave, California Mexican restaurant, where a Telsa charger is located.

If you buy an EV pre-2030 you're an early adopter and accept all the risks and liabilities IMO. Until we start seeing battery advancement tech giving 500+ miles ranges, and electric charging units at most apartment complexes, retail parking lots, etc. it's a foolish move in general.

Ive been toying with the idea of a small EV vehicle for delivering shipments to post office (its like a 10 minute drive dirt road to the post office lol) as well as an EV camper van covered in solar panels. IE a free road trip mobile. Charge up 600miles over the course of a couple days, drive to the next campsite. Stay there, charge. Or drive small amounts everyday. Can top off when needed with genny

Other than those two scenarios, where one is a business cost im lowering and one is a essentially saving hundreds a week in gas on long distance road trips, i would never get an ev

In Canada its cold af, so it needs to be kept in a heated garage. They get **** range. 10-15 grand battery replacement. They cost a lot with the cost of energy unless your fully off grid with a serious setup...

I think it would take weeks for most camper solar setups to charge 600 miles worth

My camper does like a fraction of the vans power a day it’s hardly noticeable. Albeit only one panel it just seemed not fast enough to be worth investing in over say a generator and gas tank holders on my truck rack.

My wife bought a Tesla Model Y 3 weeks ago. Took a trip from LA to Vegas Super Bowl weekend.

Had to stop in Barstow (120 Miles) to recharge. Took 35 minutes.

Had to recharge in Vegas.

Had to recharge in Barstow on the way back.

Overall 'mileage' was not that great.

Until the tech improves I cannot really rec a EV. Hybrid gets way better mileage.

That being said it's a nice car with great technology.

I know EV owners, the reason it isn't a logistical nightmare is because they have another vehicle, an ICE vehicle. Driving around town, to and from work, to get groceries etc is more convenient in an EV because they just charge it at home. Their home has fast charging and solar capable.

The problems arise when the power goes out, which just happened, we got snow for the first time in like 20 years, alot trees went down. Here in california power goes out all the time, and solar panels only provide about 30% of a households electrical needs in febuary, Vs 200% in june.

The other problem is limited range and limited charging options. My Neighbor has a Ford Excursion and a Hyundai Ionic 5. Any time they leave town, drive to Tahoe, drive to the Bay Area, Drive to LA, go camping, go to the lake etc, they take the Excursion over the Hyundai. When you are camping or at the lake you can't plug into a tree and when you are somewhere unfamiliar it is hard to find a charging station.

All that said electric cars are great, but unless you also have an ICE vehicle to fall back on, then your EV is a burden

the only EV I would buy is a Tesla, mostly because Tesla charging stations are everywhere and it only really takes 30-40 minutes to charge 70-80%, obv depending on certain factors.

esp if you have to travel long distances. regular EVs just not really practical not to mention they are a PITA even without that.

but honestly if Tesla opened up their chargers to regular poverty-cel EV's, I think they're eliminating a huge reason why you would want to buy a Tesla and could dissuade alot of people from buying one ironically. Imagine some poverty EV-cel parking their chit sideways in front of the only Tesla charging stations available. Lmao. EV and Tesla-cels both taking L's. and lol at having to deal with poverty people in their poverty EVs.

The area of your roof is quite low and solar panels are not that great, it will take you one-two weeks to fully charge your EV from a roof on your solar panel.

Maybe next Elon will "invent" a sail to rig up on the car when you can t find a charger.

Seems his other "inventions" are just a tweak of existing technology so I dont see why this would be a difficult thing.

I like the guy and all but when you think about it, he really is just tweaking existing technology and they make him out like he is some new da vinci.

There's no money in free energy. Mag drive cars have been built that don't need fuel, charging, batteries, etc but those get killed quickly.

**** yeah youre right, i hadn't really done the math tbh and didnt realize the ranges were still so low... I figured teslas were doing 500-600 miles by now lol

100kw tesla gets like 400km, so with a van lets say 250km with the extra mass/drag.

lets say 8x16 solar panel on top gives 128 sqft, 20w/^2ft so we get 2500 watts as always in use. (possibly add panels to the sides as well, but possible damage from rocks and things... not sure, but it would increase surface area, even if its less efficient. Say we add another set of panels for when you camp to get to 5000W peak sun. 48v 100kwh=2000ah, so at 2500w peak sun you would recharge 250km in around 48 hours (10 days) or 24 hours (5) with the bigger setup

I may be wrong, my breadth and depth of the field is minimal atm but thats what i came up with just now

With a genny or hybrid system, it would def save some gas money
