Are shoes a scam? Barefoot shoes
Been doing some research on shoes since someone I knew started having foot issues. Anyone here mess with barefoot/minimalist shoes with a wide toe box? Seems unnatural that our foot shape would be so cramped like they are in normal footwear.

Once you go to a wide minimalist shoe, and get used to it (doesn't take long) you will never go back. If you ever do try to go back to some silly clown shoe, you will almost immediately develope knee/foot/leg pain.

Addicted to them.

Maybe not for everyone but I love them and, no more knee pains since I started to wear them.

When I sold mattresses, I told people that buying a new one would solve all of their problems.
When I sold cars I told people that buying a new one would solve all of their problems.
The people selling these shoes are now telling you that buying them will solve all of your problems.
Remember when those stupid looking toe shoes were al the rage? How about the shoes with a giant spring for a heel? If you had bought those, they would have solved all of your problems.

I walk barefoot often. I have wide feet and wearing shoes doesn't feel all that comfortable to me. Something I rarely mention anymore is that I have found earthing to be beneficial. Earthing or grounding is walking barefoot in wet grass or along a beach. The earth has a reported slight negative electrical change and when walking barefoot the charge can give health benefits, one being thinner blood. I'm chuckling a bit mentioning this as in the past most would think I had lost my mind. Maybe so but earthing does make me feel better.

I remember reading about one of those tribes in the Amazon. They walk around all day barefoot and their feet are strong as chit. They climb trees, hike through jungle with dangerous insects and rugged terrain. They never get sore.

Yes most of the time. Feels so much better but even after years of wearing them while walking I can't run in barefoot shoes my feet are just too damaged and probably misshapen due to wearing regular shoes and boots until I was about 28. I'm very selective about what shoes my kids will wear to avoid them having the same foot fate.

The flimsy design is the double edge sword of a "minimalist shoe" On one hand its a very flexible shoe and allows for the muscles in the feet (and the calves) to work without all that additional support. On the other hand the simple and thin material makes them fall apart.Once you go to a wide minimalist shoe, and get used to it (doesn't take long) you will never go back. They can get wet, offer protection from sharp rocks and poisonous animals (urchins/rockfish) and they're very grippy on the bottom so you don't lose your footing on moss. Also, they're great for sprints. your standard running shoe weighs down the foot and forces you to conform to the shape of the shoe not the shape of your feet. With vibrams you're using you actual feet to grip into the ground to run...if that makes sense. When I sold mattresses, I told people that buying a new one would solve all of their problems.

and as for the spring shoes, nurses that I use to work with swore by them, because they're on their feet all day and they're super comfortable. You can still buy them but they conceal the spring in a casing so it looks more professional.
Rule of thumb, if you're looking for a good minimalist shoe but can't find one the alternative is to always ask for a shoe with a wide toe-box, something that allows your toes to splay out in the shoe. If the shoe is narrow and comes to a point (like some dress shoes) and it scrunches your feet, you're setting yourself up for a lifetime of issues.

You're basically placing the equivalent of a cast on your feet which is causing all the muscles and bones in the feet to atrophy. A good test to see if the muscles in your feet are weak or underdeveloped is if you can move your individual toe digits (like you can move your fingers) if you cannot do that, and you can only move them all simultaneously, (like you're wearing an oven mitten) that means the muscles in your feet are weak. Minimalist shoes or in some cases going unshod is the remedy to that problem.Nah I love shoes. My go to brand is Colehaan sales section.
and I get it, its hard to get out of the habit of buy a shoe because it looks nice or are "fashionable" but is that really worth the lifetime of body aches? You feet are your foundation, when your feet are weak and unstable (being fully supported by a shoe to the point of muscle atrophy) that weakness is a cascade up the body.

another fun fact, running barefoot/minimalist will also fix issues with your arch. If you have a fallen arch (like I do) running in minimalist shoes will give you an arch back, and if you have a high arch it will lower your arch to a normal level.

I'd say no shoes make more sense in places like the desert or hot places with soft dirt. But aint no way you can walk barefoot in modern societee.

It doesn't even have to be a certified minimalist shoe. Simply having a wide toe box is better than not having it:
I'm an officel so I have to wear busines casual on my job, there are even minimalist shoes to match more formal occasions...like these:

or these:

They're not some fancy brand and they're not "fashionable" but they're comfortable.
The goal is to allow your feet to breathe like the image on the right:

You can build up the roughness on the bottom of your feet by simply walking barefoot more often. Most people cannot walk on gravel or hot asphalt, but with time it is very easy to build up the resistance.
