Friends Who Ask You For Fitness Advice But Don’t Take It
A buddy of mine joined me at the gym for legs Sunday. He barely ever does any physical activity and his diet isn’t the best. He’s probably 5’8 in the upper 200’s. Pretty big gut.
I’ve told him I use the gym for me time and that I’m not a personal trainer. I also know he won’t listen to me anyway. So he just texted me he joined my gym. So I told him 80% is diet and he texts me
“For you maybe. Its always been exercise with me. Not saying that its not important. But I would go days where I would consume less then 1500 Calories and I would still
Put on weight.”
I was nice and responded:
“Dude I’m gonna be honest that is an extremely common excuse that nutritionists and fitness gurus hear. It’s scientifically proven. There is NO way you didn’t lose on 1500 calories. Absolutely none. I don’t believe that for a second. At all. You weren’t tracking accurately. That’s a fact. At your size and not knowing your stats you could probably lose on 2500”
I’m frustrated. He wants me to help him but before he even starts this is what I get. Anyone else experience this with friends or even like coworkers who ask for fitness advice?
I think I’m just gonna send him links to **** and not waste my energy on it.

"If you have questions I can give you the anwers. If you have the answers stop asking me ****ing questions, m8."
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

At that height and weight, all he needs to worry about is getting off the couch.

I refuse to give people advice for that reason. I'll just give some one word answer for any lifting questions now. Diet, consistency, technique, etc.

The truth about fitness is that it's not easy, you really have to learn to love it. As frustrating as it is that your friend is naïve about fitness and that he may be unintentionally annoying you, you should try to help him ingrain some consistency into his exercise habits. Showing up is the half of the work and when he learns to enjoy it he will naturally look to improve his nutrition to see better returns. The key point is to develop good exercise habits-then you can wake his ass up to reality in regards to diet haha.

Over the years I've learned that 99 out of 100 people that say they want to change, want to change without having to change, nomsayin?
It got to the point with a m8 of mine where I wasn't trying to be rude but told him "you can waste your time but you're not going to waste mine. If you want my advice I expect you to take it."
He stopped asking for my advice lol.

Holocaust denial is illegal in over 18 countries. if an organized killing of jews happened so definitely, why would people need to serve prison sentences for questioning it?

IT SHOULD be that simple but I think he’ll end up slowing his progress because he’s stubborn about nutrition.
I think I’m at the point where if I can see him sticking with his workouts and taking it seriously I’ll invest more in my advice.
I’ve already told him find a workout. Stick with it. Track progress. Be consistent and have patience. But he unfortunately has a “need to see results quickly” mentality with everything. Which is a death sentence in fitness

lol the worst topic for me is fasting. I don't even tell people when I'm doing it any more unless I have to.
I have bloatlords incredulously telling me that no one can survive without food for more than a few days, you totally go catabolic and lose all your gainz instantly, I'm going to pass out and go into FULL organ failure, etc.

Don't get pissy with him, don't feel the need to overrule him even if you are right. Just give him an answer like "oh well whatever works best for you man" and move on.

He had said something about being a special case nutrition wise.
I was just like “you asked me for advice if you don’t want to take it and spin your wheels it’s on you”

Either way, I'm a big believer in metabolism. If his metabolic rate is chit because he never exercises then it's quite possible calories affect him more then someone like me for example who has a fast metabolism and has always been able to eat whatever I want.
Regardless, people who struggle to exercise consistently and who have bad eating habits, what you tell them isn't going to mean chit. And like you said they're usually the type who want results now. Which is why I suggested the only way to respond is to just agree with them and don't let it frustrate you because at the end of the day it's not on you to convince them or motivate them, it's on them.

Eat 1500 calories (and drink fluids)
Weigh at night, 12 hours later
Weight will go up. I'm guessing that's all he did.

This is a kid who moved out to Hawaii so he could lose weight because the fast food wasn’t as accessible or cheap there instead of trying to develop good habits in the States. Every time he moves back he balloons up.
I agree metabolism is a factor, but he’s talking like fitness isn’t diet plus excersize. For success it has to be both. And sure he could get away with just moving more probably but I don’t think he’s going to burn as much as he thinks and I think he’ll eat it back which is why I was trying to explain it’s a combination.
