When trump was floating the idea of banning tiktok, I downloaded it just to see what it was about, and I get the appeal. Its kinda like Vine, but videos can be as long as 3 minutes. Often times youtubers have tiktok channels where they show abbreviated versions of their videos that just shows the "meat" of their content and you don't have to deal with ads and all the unnecessary fluff because youtube forces them to make "10minute" long videos. There's even live-streaming if you're into that sort of thing. There were citizens of Palestine live streaming the train derailment site and answering questions that people had and that was pretty interesting. Your algorithm determines what you will see. If all you're seeing is stupid pointless kiddie chit and sloots dancing that must be what you're interested in. I get DIY home and gardening tips, food recipes, dashcam footage/police chases some politics here and there, health and science facts and reviews for cars i'm interested in.

I think people trashing tiktok only see the childish and degenerate chit on there and think that is what the entire platform is. The app is only as useful as you want it to be. I can see how some impressionable 10 year old can get addicted to it, but thats not Chinas fault, thats the fault of the parent that allows them to have that app on their phone. Its up to the parent to regulate what their kids see, and I don't want soccermoms dictating how I retrieve information by promoting a ban of an app. If an adult wants to browse the app, they should have the right to do so. Its just a medium to receive information and this push to ban it feels like the US if triggered they're not able to capitalize on it because its not an American based app.

I can bet money that when the app eventually gets banned. Some american company will come out with a carbon copy replacement with the same addictive qualities, so lets not pretend like they want to ban it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Most people are incredibly unaware about tiktok and what the Chinese commie government uses it for. I gave up trying to say anything about it IRL a long time ago because all it does is make people look at you like you're an extreme autist who seldom leaves the house or something. Even conservatives I know are pretty clueless about it, or at least don't care enough to make them change their habits about anything.
The thing I don't get is why tiktok replaced vine or whatever it was called. I never used either of them and have only ever seen clips from youtube reaction videos/compilations of them, but it seems like tiktok is the exact same thing that vines were. People were absolutely obsessed with vines videos for a few years there, then it vanished like a fart in the wind that everyone conveniently just forgot about to make way for tiktok thots.

what is tiktok tracking that US based apps like Meta/Instagram/dating apps/any google service isn't tracking? ALL apps track you in some form or another. Hell, even Samsungs pre-installed camera app has the set default of pinning the location where you take photos, and then Google will make suggestions of restaurants near where you took that photo, lol. Sure, you can disable it but its purposefully hidden deep in the settings of the phone and the moment there's an update to the app (and there's usually a couple of updates every month) those settings are reset so you have to do it all over again.

Never had a Tiktok because I drew a line in the sand with social media and said no new ones, but I'm assuming it works just like Instagram and ******** reels. The only thing I hate about those is it's REALLY easy for the algorithm to degenmax you if you get off your guard.
