Maybe forums died because

nobody wants to be exposed to other types of people, which the platform can't control. People are now accustomed to an algorithm spoon feeding a mirror image of themselves, or whatever they think they should believe in.

Misc is sort of like this too of course but the process is organic at lwast. There are probably lots of softies lurking but they don't dare post lest be bullied and negged into oblivion.

I don't use Reddit, closest thing to a forum but they seem to achieve the same end by a bit of algorithm and bit of censorship.

Forums are dying because people are f@cking retarded.

A couple of years ago this kid told me he passed his WWII test and I asked him what he thought about Hitler and he said.....who?

If you have THAT intellectual level in society they are going to be looking at pictures and consuming youtube videos, not sitting around having discussions.

Another kid I was working with did not understand 60% of what words I use and he comes from a fairly wealthy family.

I think over-moderation had a lot to do with the decline.

Like forums were at their peak during the wild west era of the internet, when people could just say whatever whenever. Ever since the web 2.0 era set in, forums got overly strict and moderators started to enforce subjectively based upon their personal biases. This eliminated the open discussion format for a lot of forums, eliminating a great deal of their desirability.

This might be true if the post view numbers are accurate. Post views far outnumber the amount of users who actually reply sometimes.

That's why I believe some alts are original in the sense that they might be users who've lurked for years, but finally made a faceless avi account to post without fear of ridicule.

People think this forum died because of the rise of "right wing" extremism but it was liberal moderators who were swinging the ban hammer the hardest.

Those mods are now gone (this is one of them, a self-described Marxist:https://mobile.twitter.com/pogue25)

People complain about all the right wing talk on here but forget that without this type of community, we'd be another over-moderated reddit-type forum.

So people can either enjoy freedom, and the people who love freedom, or they can go find authoritarian liberal sh*thole messageboards where you can't make fun of mentally ill crossdressers, simps, groomers, Liberals, or Democrats in general.

Exactly. It isn't conservatives that are quick to ban and censor anyone who has a contrary opinion from them, conservatives are usually willing to engage in conversation with their opposition. It is the left who is always quick to call other people names and hide behind authority.

I remember in the misc early days when detectiving was pretty mild and lulzy. Then people started to take it too seriously and went too far with it resulting in less epic threads. IMO bad moderators played a bigger role on the downfall of this forum and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the bad ones fall from grace.

Probably the only reason this forum is still active is because they got rid of bad moderators. Too many forums refused to do that, and they essentially died out.

This account was meant to be a lurker account after I couldn't remember the password to my 08 account. When I did start posting I got banned pretty much right away because I am sure I looked like an altmaxxer.

Everyone went to reddit sub reddits and used that as their replacement for niche forums pre 2012. Used to be on niche forums (fish tanks, carnivorous plants, reptiles, ect)...all the traffic decline from 2012-2016 and went belly up post 2016. Went from a page of threads a day to one post a month, srs. Skip over to reddit sub forum of the same topic and theres copious amounts of traffic. There wasnt a new surge of participants in theses subjects, not was their an increase in internet research surrounding these topics...people moved from one platform to another. Social media and reddit gobbled everyone up.

Sucks because social media isnt long form enough to get into nitty gritty and reddit is for homos. Nothing better than googling a question and finding a 7 page discussion on it with real people and pictures from 2011.

Forums are still the best place to find a lot of specialized information, because of the depth of discussions they would have and the passion some users would have for various topics. Big social media platforms are usually too shallow to replace that.
