What is something you never go cheapskate/cheaper brands/non-brands on?

Clothes and shoes for me. Makes a difference and ends up being cheaper in the long run. Talking about mid-range vs cheap fast fashion stuff not designer/high-end.

Shoes, depends. Screw name brand sneakers, but I do like my oxfords. But I haven't run across any oxfords that didn't last, so I guess it doesn't have to be a brand name either.

I agree but usually there is no good heuristic for finding quality among no name brands.

And when I say name brand I never talk about GUCCI, LV, HUGO etc those are definitely much better quality than cheap no name Shein/HnM/China stuff but the price tag include the logo.

However, I find that for gym-ware Nike Adidas is much better than anything no name, Uniqlo/JCrew for normal clothes and classic Nike Adidas for sneakers (China stuff might look the same but doesnt wear the same - feet hurt hard af).

And since the above are that budget/mid-range price-to-quality ratio sweet spot, not sure how to improve the ratio by finding higher quality (brand name or not).

Maybe that comparison I just laid out you never really considered as avoiding HnM and china stuff might have been already a no brainer for you.

Auto mechanics.

I always take my car to a local mechanic that always wins top shop awards for the city and shiiit. Definitely on the spendier side, but I don't seem to have half as many issues as people I know who consitently choose their car mechanic based on who will do it the absolute cheapest. Yes, I even have oil changes there; again, no problems like with people who insist on going to one of the cheap places to save $10, but they will spend $15 eating out to lunch that day.

Same with auto body work. Anytime I've needed body work done, I stick with a local place known for quality. I'll gladly pay the extra 10% - 15% to know they're actually going to restore it to like-new status instead of half asssssing the job. Tons of people talk about having issues with auto/mechanic shops on a regular basis, and I can't help but notice they all tend to be the types who pick auto work places based primarily on seeking the lowest price. I never understood why so many people seem to think it makes sense to expect grade A work when you're picking places that charge grade C or grade D quality work prices.

Anything that you use on a daily basis.

-any large machinery or appliances that you use every day or that are very important to have available at all times (refrigerators/washing mahines driers, etc)

Event tickets. Lol @ spending hundreds of dollars and blowing an entire day, parking, security, food, etc. just to sit 9 miles away in the nosebleeds and watch it on the jumbotron. Would much rather stay home.

Only went to one game last year, but I could almost smell the sweaty angus. Watched the rest on pirated redzone.

When I was young, I would always go for whatever was cheapest to get the job done. As I got older, and hopefully wiser, experience has led me to believe it's always better to buy the quality option rather than just the cheapest options, in everything.

Hotels are the same. When you add up food, travel, entertainment etc getting a slightly better hotel isn't a huge increase on the total trip, but people spend ages on comparison websites trying to save $50.

Legit.

sometimes going to a bad hotel even if you spend little time there can really detract from a vacation. Like how one must feel at the end of the day if they know they have to sleep in an uncomfortable car. A lotta those "van life" people are kinda depressing.

Tools. Way to better to spend twice as much and get a high quality tool that will last a life time.

With that said harbor freight has some awesome deals on a decent tools from time to time. I only use festool and knipex when possible.
