What things do you do to go out of your way to help the environment?

Hardcore climate activist, or meh on the whole thing, what do you do? Post it here. I think we could all be better stewards of planet cleanliness even if we don’t buy into green policy wealth distribution from the middle class.


Since I’ve been a kid and to this day I always cut up the plastic rings around bottles and cans. Seeing the videos of wildlife caught in that stuff in elementary school it seems to easy not to.

Good point actually. I’ve never once heard a climate activist talk about these masks you literally see on the ground everywhere. How biodegradable are they?

Gardening and composting, raising chickens. From call it may through october 90% of my produce comes from my yard. THat results in me not contributing to the green house emmissions of transporting produce from mexico or across the country. On average produce travels 1800 miles via semi trucks before it reaches the grocery store, same goes for eggs. Obviously that mileage will be more pronounced the further north you live

Though you could probably get a similar result by shopping at a local farmers market of using a local CSA

I support getting rid of plastic bags.
I don't shop at Aldi's who insist on wrapping their produce in fukking plastic.

I cut the plastic rings as well.
Other things I do is buy as much local produce and meat from the local farmers market when possible, take a bag along when I walk my dog to pick up trash along the way, compost, plant trees wherever I can. Simple stuff like that.

OP, you're conflating not polluting the shyt out of the planet, which no one can say is a bad thing, with not producing CO2, because it causes global warming/climate change.
I do what I can to not do the former, because it is demonstrably a real thing.

Recycle as much as possible, walk where I can, and most importantly I live in a small house that most of you miscers would call poverty. But it's big enough for my family and most importantly we heat and cool as small a footprint as possible.

Also by the time I could afford a better place I was too lazy to move...but let's not focus on that.

I’m in the same boat. Make well into six figures in a low COL area, but still in my starter home 12 years later (my mortgage is less than most people pay to rent a 2 bedroom apt)

Unlike evolutionary below, I refuse to be hot so when appropriate AC is cranked to the max at all times

Some of the usual such as I recycle. Some believe driving an EV is helpful for the environment and most of my driving is done in EV mode.

One of the less common acts i've done is plant a lot of trees and bushes on the property. The property is maybe half an acre. I'm not entirely sure of its size but I have at last count about 80 trees, mainly palm trees. I didn't plant all of the trees but some. I also planted many bushes and grasses.

It makes more sense to me to see more plants planted than some of these expensive reportedly green solutions being promoted.

Along these lines ~

My house is a 1950's rancher 1500 sq ft. All 3 beds are like 12x12. Not a master bath, 2 story foyer, or bigly greatroom to be seen. We would use so much less energy as a country if we actually lived in houses to suit our needs rather than getting them as big as we can afford.

This is really good actually, and something most people can accommodate, though a trip to the nursery that has you coming home with a couple trees/bushes won’t be cheap
