So Japan's unmanned moon lander just failed...

In 2023, Japan, literally a country of nerds, failed to land an unmanned rocket on the moon.

You're telling me we sent people there 50 years ago on a flying calculator?

The difference is that there were people in the last one. Much easier to manage a vehicle or anything else when you're manning actual controls.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Go check out a mock up of the Apollo lander and get back to me on if we really landed on the moon.

Or visit it at the Smithsonian in DC and see it in person. I remember being like 9 years old and immediately thinking “there’s no way that flimsy thing landed on the moon.” It’s like a pile of sticks wrapped in tin foil.

Although I fully believe that we have successfully landed rovers on Mars so I don’t understand why Japan would fail to send a robot to the moon.

We’ve had around 10 astronauts land on the moon…

Brah, we drove a buggy and had time to play golf on the moon.

Japan needs a better press office.

I heard recently that NASA is planning a "new" manned mission to the moon within the next couple years. Absolutely laughable lmao

What they really mean is they’ll either subcontract Elon to actually do it, or use the pepperoni hug spot AI to generate a fake landing video

Yes. That was quite hard. But that also wasn't Japan trying to do it. They'll get it eventually.

We built tons of great skyscrapers in early 1900s too, and today can barely make one after a decade. Apples and oranges. Speaks more to governments making simply things easy than anything

Imagine building a national freeway system today, or railroads.

Even Hitler himself was a Jew. Keep coping though.

Yeah I saw it. Looked about as advanced as my old 65 Mustang which wasn’t even safe on the freeways in California

It is kind of funny seeing some of the moon landing stuff and realizing how tiny or fragile it looks. I had the same reaction in Chicago Museum of Science & Industry with the Apollo 8 spacecraft. Looked like it was made out of aluminum and tinfoil. Still, the outwards appearance often belies the advanced engineering and materials that wouldn't be recognized by a layperson like myself. To think otherwise is ignorant IMO.

To be fair, I'd have more confidence in a 1960 American man than a 2023 American man.

I mean you can put the efforts into perspective just looking at the $$$ involved: the US spent $25.8billion on the Apollo program between 1960 and 1973, which is probably closer to $300billion today when adjusted for inflation
