Midlife crisis time.

Been a bicyclist since I was 3, very into it. Never really wanted a motorcycle at all until the last 2 years or so.

I want my driving to be an experience, not a necessary evil.

Whenever I would take my bicycle among cars in SOCAL, it was the coolest feeling ever to split lanes of gridlock beach traffic, now I want that same feeling with a motor.

In Arizona you are now allowed to split lanes.

I'm not looking to get anything wild, something like 300cc-500cc range. I don't even intend to go on the interstate, just surface roads. Maybe as I get more comfortable, I'll do everything.

any tips from miscers?

-Watch a TON of expert YouTube videos.
-Understand why accidents happen and how to avoid them

Tip from a 15 year rider that hung it up 4 years ago: don't do it. The streets are more dangerous today than they've ever been with these ****ing zoomers in their phones. The progression of danger from 2005 to now was easily observable.

Source: Over 100K miles accross 3 bikes as my daily in Florida Cities.

Get a bike for the track. Even if you never race, riding on the track > riding on the street.

Damn this is a brutal tip for someone who dreams about motorcycles daily. It's all I think about. Everything else seems boring in comparison.

That said, you are in Florida, home of inbred retards. Some states like Arizona is much more friendly for motorcycles.

If you're in the country and the only thing you're dodging is the random dear here and there, go for it. If you live in a city or in a populous area, I'd recommend avoiding it. Fun times while it last, but I have a good 5 near death experiences, where a split second decision was the difference between life and vegetable.

Just get on it and practice. Thats really the only way to get any better at using it.

Also, dont want to sound like grand dad but wear a helmet, You dont have to in Az but there is a 100% chance you will dump your bike at some point so better safe than sorry. I have a clam shell type that I can open up at lights and stuff for more ventilation so its not so restricting yet works fine in a crash.

Go wth at least the 500 because it wont take much practice before you want to drive on the freeway and you want enough power to get away. No need to spend on anything super fancy or super fast, they will always be available so you can get one later down the road.

Main thing is to not trust anyone else on the road. they dont see you or if they do they will have zero problems running you off the road into a ditch. This goes for people you make eye contact with, people who smile at you, doesnt matter, dont trust any of them and stay as clear as you can because they will run you down if they get the chance. What usually gets guys hurt is thinking they can trust other drivers like you can in a car, Its just not reality as for some reason people will gladly run a bike off the road and not think anything about it. srs

What were those experiences?

There's a chitload of motorcycles out here. It never rains, and seems viable on our roads as far as selecting safer alternate routes (I do this all the time as a biyclist)

My other consideration was, of course an EBIKE that would give me about 10mph more average speed than my bicycle, but I'm still allowed to scoot over to pedestrian paths when the roads are sketchy.

Get a dirtbike first and see if that scratches your itch. Agree with poster above don't do city riding it's noticeably worse these days. I only do backcouuntry roads and not even that much anymore.

Have posted a couple of them in a thread that popped up here earlier, but they go like this (cliffed):

-In rain, car turning in front, doesn't get into turn lane, leaves entire ass exposed. Had to either break hard and lose the front wheel or split a narrow lane. Chose to split a lane with a car next to me, so close I coulda made out with the chick in the lane next to me while moving 60mph
-In traffic, guy moves into me (as if hes changing lanes) without looking immediately to his left. I was right next to him - I knock on his window at 45mph to prevent his lane change, he goes into a quick fishtail (because he was so surprised) trying to over correct back into his lane.
-In traffic going 50 ish, cars in front of me randomly lock up for no reason. I had no out at the time to either side, slam hard on all my breaks. Do an unintended endo, car in front of me realizes I'm ****ed (or sees my rear raising into the air, who knows). He moves as close as he can to the car in front of em. My bike finally stops on his bumper (front tire touched his rear). Rear end comes down and lands. God bless this dood for his awareness. Prolly saved my life.
-Couple more like the above, but can't remember all of em.

EDIT:Any rider of significant time frame will have a group of similar stories. Too many **** sticks on the road these days. As for the 3 bikes:

-Suzuki Katana 750, Suzuki Gixxer 600, Yahmah stryker 1400, in that order. Loved my gixxer (felt like a toy underneath you), was stolen from me 10 years ago ish (was a thread on here when it happened)

I'd go ahead and do a MSF course, then buy a motorcycle and get a jacket with built in airbag vest. Miscers are telling you don't do it, but then I see old guys in their 60s still riding. My grandfather is nearly 70 and still rides in Chicago.

I'm not trying to demean you, but those all sound like your fault man. Riding in the rain, riding in blind spots, bad lane position, riding too close behind traffic

Most riders don't know how to ride or get too comfortable.

Lold, a lady that can't turn is my fault. A dood who doesn't check his blind spot is my fault. Arguably the last one is on me as I was moving fast for traffic. I'd say you'ev no ****ing idea what you're talking about. If you can make it over 20K and still be alive, I'd give you props. Most of you wont have the metal or the reactions to make it that far. Srs.

EDIT: Basically, if you weren't a prodigy on the video games you played as a child, don't ride. That reaction time will save you. If you're average as ****, You're a dead man.

Scary but sounds like you were coming in HOT on most of them, with the exception of the lane changer guy. I've been run off the road by cars on my bicycle, but with such a small machine, you should have the ability to use the shoulder in these situations, or at the very least you can run on the dividing lines to get out of the way.

The scary situations are when a drunk slams you on a bike, you're dead.... But in a car you'd be fine.Yeah I know, I think a lot of the longevity has to do with how safely you ride.

I see road bicyclists claim that the roads are dangerous, but the vast majority of them use the road like absolute fuktards, so of course it's dangerous for them.

Yes those are your fault. Not leaving enough space & riding in blind spots. Even in my dumb SUV I'm always expecting drivers to do those things. I don't drive near near people in any situation. The only scenario is if you get rear ended.

A lot of guys buy 600s and think they're good after one year of riding. Have you even thought about taking advanced courses? Most Probably don't.

EDIT: And to be clear, I called it a blindspot, but riding immediately left of the driver side window isn't a blind spot, dood need only look left or hear my ****ing engine to know someones there. Its not like he had to look over his shoulder into his actual blindspot. And its not like gixxers are ****ing quiet...JFL at nubbies

Do a little more research and you can find ones that go much faster

This is why I like mine, I stay off the streets and on trails nobody says chit (quiet)

You can peddle up a 40 degree incline and pass people pushing their bikes up

And if I go on the streets I'm @ 45mph average cruising speed

You get allot of stares and trip cars out cus they'll misjudge your speed thinking its a bicycle

But yeah when all is said and done, motorcycles are still 10000x more fun

I read sonny barger's book "let's ride" and was surprised to see his extreme level of caution toward riding. You'd think hell's angel would be saying the opposite, but his entire book was a rant about how to be safer

Biggest thing you need to realize, and I remind myself, is death & being paralyzed is much more probable. But you can also research how most crashes are alcohol involved or riding too fast exceeding skill level.

Take the safety course
