Holy Fook, Helldivers 2

First one was absolutely superb. 4 player twin stick shooter with randomized objectives, heavy weapons, vehicles, and huge starship trooper vibes.

One of the best mechanics was your cooldowns were air strikes, artillery fire, or reloads/heavy weapons that got dropped in a giant metal drop pod from your supply ship in orbit. The drops would land randomly somewhere on screen so your teammates could/WOULD get crushed by all the powerups dropping from the skies, lmao. Friendly fire always on.

EDIT: At 1:20 you can see a reinforcements pod drop from the skies. This is how you get more ammo, heavy weapons etc sent down to you by your dropship in orbit, and yes it will 100% fukk up whoever is accidentally underneath it, including enemies if you're good enough, but definitely your teammates. At least in the first game you had to put in a specific fighting game style button combo to call down whatever specific tool you wanted sent - trying to do that in the heat of a firefight was gold. I can still hammer out the pattern for my exosuit from memory lol.

Yeah it's a very ambitious sequel considering what the first was like, an indie sorta game going AAA in a sense. Wonder how well they will pull it off, it is very similar to the new Starship Troopers game that is still in early access, although that seems to have more of a Fortnite fort building sorta thing going for it.

The first one had the exact same vibe. As a huge fan of Starship Troopers that was one of the best parts. All the lines your guys shout are SUPER patriotic and cornball - "HOW BOUT A TASTE OF FREEDOM?"

Risk of Rain moved the 3d with RoR2 which was a huge success, I think they took some design notes from that book.

I played with 2 homies, then we'd always throw down the reinforcement beacon so some random would join our games as 4th man and cause chaos lmao.

Once you purchased all the best support powers it definitely got more repetitive. I remember endgame was mostly just everyone summoning hoverbikes and racing around the map grabbing all those little resource nodes to upgrade your research, then booking it to extraction.

Still, while it lasted it was absolutely madness and so fun, amazing little indie.

That's the first thing that sold me on the trailer, with the second being the shift to third person shooting. The world needs more games that take notes from Starship Troopers and Earth Defense Force.

I'm far more inclined to give Helldivers 2 a shot now that it's third person. Twin stick shooters don't feel right to me with a controller, and I hate having to shift to mouse and keyboard just to feel like I can aim properly. Something about trying to match the rotation of the analog stick to the direction of aiming never feels accurate enough to not be frustrating, but third person? Now we're cooking.
