In the movie Taken, why can’t Liam Neesons pay the ransom?

He’s like “I don’t have any money arrggghhh…” But then he says he has had an extremely long career with a very particular set of skills.

Where did all this guys money go? He’s gotta be in his mid 50’s with a daughter her age, so where is all his money? Did he spend it all on hookers and blow? That’s very irresponsible of Liam Neesons to do that.
