Yeah yeah I get it’s an amazing movie and DDL is one of the most skilled actors of all time, and the ending scene is stunning with an insane shock value as the veritable climax of the film.

However, Daniels actions aren’t appropriate thematically. Daniel has been shown to be ruthless and uncaring but never violent. And yes I understand he’s a bitter and lonely alcoholic but it doesn’t make sense that he would kill Eli.

Eli posed no threat as the Bandy Tract was ostensibly under Daniel’s domain already as he had access to the oil underneath even though he didn’t own the land.

Having learned this fact, Eli was devastated halfway to the point of insanity on top of being financially broken after his church and town had long since become defunct.

I posit that it was out of character for Daniel to brutally murder Eli as there was nothing to gain from it, and it actually lessened Eli’s suffering and robbed Daniel of prolonging his anguish and thereby his own satisfaction in watching him become a broken man like himself.

Further, as stated previously Daniel had not shown himself to be violent although he had no qualms about abandoning both his morals as well as his own “son”.

Can anyone explain to me why Daniel would act so out of character and bludgeon Eli to death about the head with a bowling pin as portrayed in the final scene?

He disowned his son because he was threaten by his business goals, he killed his imposter brother for trying to dupe him, and in an alcohol fueled rage he beats Eli to death for humiliating him when he forcing him to publicly repent years earlier.

So no, its not out of character for him do what he did.

Now there’s a possible motive
