People either assume rail workers are loaded or poor
There’s no inbetween srs.
Whenever Ive gotten into arguments with the general public they either assume I’m mega rich or work for peanuts.
For example had a few angry passengers say ‘you lot cancelling trains and want a pay rise when you’re on 50k+ a year, fking joke’
Or ‘I’m not paying for that service you’re on way more money than me yet still strike’
On the flip side had a few say ‘you’re gonna refuse me travel when your on 8 quid an hour ‘I earn way more than you m8’ etc.
The reality is I make okayish/slightly above average money for where I live.
although at my company we all wear same uniform so people assume I’m a train driver making £60k a year, I can make close with overtime but not on there basic.
Although I plan to become a train driver eventually tbh.

Mainly because we have very strong unions and great pension schemes/benefits with massive bonus rates for overtime and weekends plus free train travel whenever I want.

As a mechanic I totally understand. People know how much auto repair charges and think I must be making a killing, but then when they see my house and car they are like "how can you afford that being a mechanic".

You’ve left out another group of people- those that don’t consider them at all.

You can’t compare the North of England to these places.
Making 60k-70k where I live is the equivalent of 200k+ in most of the US.

Where I live is 15% higher COL than Leeds. And where I live is right around national average so your COL is at least close to like, a majority of the U.S.

Don’t you make threads about how you get cucked massively by taxes and struggle on 200k? Maybe move to Blackpool or something.

Btw you never responded about the COL where you live. Just an FYI it's nothing like having 200K+ in most of the US. Having $200K where I live would be the equivalent of you making $175K.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Like, at 100K you're paying The same amount in taxes as someone making 140K in the US. At 150K in the UK you pay the same taxes as someone making 214K in the US.

never gave it much thought but always assumed they were on the average or slightly lower side
as you said they probably do have the strongest union there is, fukkers always on strike and the entire country is pissed off lol
buddy of mine worked in their central workplace, that job has all those benefits as well and you don't have to deal with fukking NPC's on the trains (also I think better pay but not sure)
