LIFTING brahs - what is your favorite delt exercie? (DYEL welcome)
Friday morning at 7am is push day on my end. I hit chest, shoulders, and triceps very hard. My favorite shoulder exercise for many years now has been the side lateral raise using dumbbells - various iterations of it, mostly slow and controlled tempo, really pushing it as far past the point of failure as you can. You can get pretty creative with this movement but the common denominator throughout is that it absolutely blasts your delts into another dimension. Getting a pissening shoulder pump feels great overall. Makes you look like a comic book character.
For your time....

I have the magazine with this original Larry Scott delt workout article. My uncle gave it to me a long, long time ago. I remember doing it just as Larry suggested and it was a fantastic workout.

Same, but with cables instead. I used to have rotator cuff issues so using the cables helps me stay super strict with good resistance throughout the motion. Also can go heavy but no need to go super heavy and jerk the weight around.

I do side lateral raises all the time, but feel like I get tons of trap involved
I love straight OHP for shoulders, I feel the most burn in the desired muscles going to failure with that

lateral raises on an incline bench with dumbbells in the sagittal plane (e.g. somewhere between 45 and 20 ish degrees from the body). keep feet off the ground to reduce swinging. fookin hard at the top of the movement.
lateral cable raises, set the machine around wrist height and keep tension the entire time, same sagittal plane
I slightly rotate wrists inward (like you're pouring something out of a cup) and that tends to let me feel it even more in the middle delts

I was drunk back in 87 one night and tried to show a friend I could bench 225 . I never warmed up and when it came down my right rotator made a pop noise and it’s never been the same since .
So I can’t do overhead without a lot of pain , and do incline benching with dumbbells instead .
I love the pump I get from it ,but it was aggravating the shoulder getting heavier ones into position till I started using power hooks , now things are great

^^ damn I really miss the cables. I remember finishing off my delts that way back when I was training in a commercial gym. Basically all I'm doing these days is heavy overhead press and some side lat raises. It's a really stripped back, bare-bones, caveman-esque training program I've put together.
Thanks for contributing, boyos.

it's more for traps but I started doing front raises but all the way overhead - do it as a finisher, one set of 50 using a 25lb plate - trying to work up to 100 reps with a 45

Big fan of OHP, I was all bout 5-8 range since I started but a few months ago I've focused on the 12-20 rep range and noticed a huge improvement in muscle volume.
I'm all for new talent coming to the gym, but c'mon dude at leasttrya little.

^^ Damn, what a time to be alive. There was guys like this back when I'd train in the gym 10 years ago but they were at least trying to lift. Based on all the stories I'm hearing now, it seems like a designated hangout spot. I can see that being really annoying especially if you're there to put your head down, work hard, and get out. I have to admit, I'm really glad I decided to pull the trigger on building a dungeon gym in my garage 5 years ago. It was a logistical/financial challenge up front but is truly the gift that keeps on giving. You really don't need that much space/equipment to get a sickening workout and I'd 100% recommend it to anyone with a bit of extra space. Feels like working out in a 70s gym. What I do is mostly power rack/barbells/dumbbells, garage door open, warm spring breeze coming in, stack of thrash metal albums on permanent rotation played on my 20 year old staticky boombox, wearing nothing but 70s lifting shorts, training barefoot at times, yelling as loud as I want, slamming weights as hard as I want. It's all incredibly cathartic. No matter what kind of day I'm having, as soon as I finish working out in there, it's impossible to be stressed/frustrated. You get all of that schit out on the weights.
Got some pretty good shoulder DOMS as I type this. Switched around my training lately as I phase out of my winter/spring cut.
