What people don't understand about Samurai was that they weren't a group of warriors protecting villages and innocent people, they were retainers employed by their feudal lords (Daimyo) and they were loyal only to their lords.

Bushido isn't a code of honor comparable to Chilvary amongst European knights, this is a Western misunderstanding. Bushido is actually more akin to a social contract that binds a Samurai retainer to his lord. The Daimyo lord employs the Samurai by paying him a salary and granting him land, and in exchange the Samurai must pledge absolute loyalty to his lord, even be willing to die upon command.

Bushido has nothing to do with morality or character or courage or bravery, it's about fealty to a lord.
