Cliffs:

- a couple of conservationists got permission to try an experiment on public land that had become degraded

- a juice company was contracted to dump tons of orange peels [a waste product of their business] in the area

- a rival juice company got salty that their rival was benefiting from this cost saving measure and filed suit to end the practice

- they succeeded and the project was halted and abandoned

- 16 years later some university decided to go and see what happened

- they found that there was no sign of the dumped peels and instead there was a lush rain forest in an area that had been taken over by grasses


A similar experiment was done with coffee waste in an area that had been taken over by invasive grass. The coffee skins killed the grass and mixed with the dead grass to make a rich soil. After 2 years the area was 80% covered in tree canopy. Though the coffee pulp can have some negative side effects too.

They discovered composting. Coffee and orange peels would have a ton of nitrogen in them along with magnesium and other fertilizer stuff.

IMO we could improve our systems by working with nature more where we can.

And it isn't like this is new, even in SA. I remember a bit from the Ancient Aliens guy IIRC saying that when they analyze the soil at depth that what we know as the amazon rain forest was grasslands in the past and appears to have been cultivated. Also that the population of the Americas prior to the arrival of Europeans rivaled the population of Europe.

They just developed differently; some from culture and some from adaptation to the climate. The thinking is that they had food forests [aka: Eden].

If we were really about saving the planet [and the humans] instead of maximum wealth extraction then IMO there would be more investment in local food and permaculture vs. worrying about reducing meat production.

Meat is a high quality food source with greater energy and nutrient density than most other foods and on top of that some types of land are much better suited for grazing animals vs. row crops or forests.

That would be nice but would require a lot of local citizens to dedicate large portions of their time to farming, which nobody wants to do. Hence the creation of centralized mega farms and importing from poor countries.

This pisses me off. Like seriously why sue them when it's for the good of the environment. Maybe check yourself on why they didn't go to your company first for this idea. Effing A man.

Well if we lose petroleum based fertilizers and cheap transport we could land there anyway.

IMO communities could be moving towards installing plants that can provide food now though. Like you can plant a pecan tree or walnut tree instead of oak or ash. Or if you are planting maple trees anyway you could plant a variety that can be tapped for sap to make syrup.

The pushback I found was that productive landscaping can require more maintenance and the food that is grown may draw unwanted wildlife. OTOH you could start building in some resilience and if a group wanted to put the work in I don't see why the produce couldn't be harvested for commercial use of some kind, either for profit or not.

I intentionally planted a few small fruits on my little plot, though it likely won't amount to anything. Tried to select plants that would be both decorative and productive when possible.
I remember seeing something about how that country was prospering, but Gaddafi was attempting to shrug off the US$ banking system or something.
