Why do video game companies release trailers years before the game will come out?

The "teaser" for mass effect 4 came out in December 2020.

I figured I'd look for some news, since it's now July 2023, perhaps we are nearing a release date?

Oh what's that, the latest update I can find is that the game is still in PRE PRODUCTION?

Elder scrolls 6 teaser trailer is even worse being officially 5 years old. With the game expected to take another 5 or 6 years yet.

Why even bother?

These games wouldn't receive any less hype if they released a trailer 1 year out from launch, or hell even VERY soon before launch, like say 1 week.

"hey guys here's the trailer for mass effect 4 oh BTW it's out next week, prorders open now" the Internet would **** itself.

I belive all they do is set themselves up for something they can never deliver on

Do you REALLY think TES 6 will bear the fruit of a 10+ year wait?

Then half the games you have to wait for 3 months of patches before they are enjoyable.

Counting chickens before the eggs even formed inside the mama.

Sometimes I think the marketing department needs to be collectively slapped.

I agree, a year max is a reasonable enough amount of time to raise awareness, show off a reliable depiction of what the game is going to look/play like, and less overall waste in advertising dollars well before the game is ready.

It's gotten so ridiculous that it seems counterproductive when these premature announcements wind up falling off the radar for most people, so they've blown their load on possible hype, while sometimes releasing something that looks totally different from what people expected based off the initial reveal. Avowed's a good example where the "real" trailer definitely left palpably disappointed taste in a lot of people's mouths after the first teaser.

The companies most guilty are already so big that they don't evenneedword of mouth so far in advance and would do far better to just surprise people with something they can feasibly play within several months.

Yeah, "we developed this game with ultra PC graphics from 2025 in mind," only for it to release looking mediocre because that's the only way it would actually run on consoles and 99% of computers.

Even better when the game footage doesn't have microstutter, hitching, or dynamic resolutions of piss that mortals have to put up with.

Avowed was the same way. Announced in 2020.

Now suddenly there's finally a trailer, but a good one at least with actual gameplay.

TES VI is even worse with this though. Teaser from 2018, but now they're saying we won't see it till 2026 or later LMFAO.

I was hyped af for Avowed, first trailer gave the impression it could be a legit Elder Scrolls spiritual successor but turned out to be skyrim fortnite.

It's for hiring purposes apparently. A dev on twitter mentioned it, they do it to create a bit of hype but mostly it's for studio's to acquire people that may want to work on that particular game.

I preorder anything I know I'm going to buy. Get preorder bonuses and chit why not. Obviously if I'm not sure about the game I'll wait for reviews.
